Just great. Not only dump the shuttle but cancel its replacement and pay the Russians to get us there.

That worked out great.

does the science justify that enormous cost? Maybe those billions would be better spent on researching cure for cancer or something

"There is a greater risk of losing the ISS when it's unmanned than if it were manned," Michael Suffredini, the ISS program manager for the US space agency, said in a conference call with Russian officials. "The risk increase is not insignificant," he added.

:: snort ::

No, it's not "insignificant."

They just said they could keep it going indefinitely without crew on board, now they say they may very well lose it without anybody on board? Is anybody able to make up their minds?

Man, it’s too bad we don’t have some sort of reusable spacecraft that could make regular trips to service the ISS. It could be made like a plane, and we’d launch it like a rocket and let it glide back to Earth. A “Space Plane” or, even better a “Space Shuttle”!! Wouldn’t that be cool! (Sarcasm is dripping, no tag required ;-)

Would somebody pleas tell me what the ISS is good for?
Has its existence produced any worthwhile scientific knowledge?
Is there anything that has been discovered as a result of the ISS?
Can its continued existence be justified?.........

Thank you, Obama. Without you we might have kept the space shuttles going for a couple more years until a replacement was ready.

Wow, we really are seeing a lot of firsts under this administration.
The debt rating, we have to ask the Russians for a ride into space; last week we heard that we can't even manufacture basic anti viral medicines, etc, etc...

If we can re elect him; we might have our technological abilities back to the 1890’s at least.
Maybe we can bring back steam locomotives?

Never deal with the Russians. They’re corrupt through and through, and given the choice between being successful at something themselves, or preventing America from being successful at it, they’ll choose the latter every time. They’re like Arabs/Muslims in that regard.

It seems like every time a new, wet-behind-the-ears president comes along, we have to learn that lesson all over again from scratch, at great harm to our national defense and scientific progress, and at great expense to the taxpayer. Veeeery discouraging. Ronald Reagan is the only president in recent memory to have known it: Don’t enter into any “cooperative” deals with the Russians.
