Top union official blasts Gov. Christie for requiring state employees to report to work Published: Monday, August 29, 2011, 2:03 PM Updated: Monday, August 29, 2011, 2:14 PM By Star-Ledger Staff

TRENTON – A top official in the largest state workers union said Gov. Chris Christie should have ordered non-essential workers to stay home today.

Employees trying to make their way into Trenton today found some of the main arteries into the city closed from flooding, backing up traffic for miles.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s taking people hours to get in, especially in Trenton,” said Hetty Rosenstein, state director of the Communications Workers of America. “My problem is I don’t think that’s at all what the local police departments or state police want. I don’t really understand it.”

Christie Sunday night told New Jerseyans “If you don’t have to go to work tomorrow, don’t go to work tomorrow.”

But he also said state workers “are expected to show up for duty.”

“If there are people who have particular problems reporting to work, they need to communicate with their supervisors about those particular problems, but I’m not going to make a blanket closing of state government. We have things that we have to do,” he said. “I’m not saying that we’re not going to be understanding of people who can’t get to work when I’m telling people ‘If you don’t have to go to work, don’t.’ But on the other hand… I don’t want to just close state government. I think that’s a really bad thing to do in the aftermath of this problem.”

It would appear that there’s not much difference in added value whether or not a union member actually reports for “work”.

Indeed, union work is among our strongest oxymorons.

Want an example?

Go and find one of my junk-level GM cars in the rust lot.

You gotta love Christie in that job kicking butts. He knows those workers get tons of paid leave, why give them anymore?

Let’s identify all “non-essential” workers and let them spend more time with their families on permanent basis.

As a former Garden Stater, I’d be amazed if they could tell the difference.

If they’re non-essential then why do they have jobs?

I wonder if the state workers were ordered to stay home would they have received pay for that day? If so, the governor made the right call. If on the other hand that is not so, then the state could have saved a days pay for all state employees and the gov screwed up!

Not only are State workers better rewarded than us commercial pukes - why, they are just better people.

We should know better than to expect them to be inconvenienced; that’s for us ‘little’ people.

Federal employees won’t show up for work for another week, after they get counseling on stress related weather anomolies which induce commuting paranoia, a bonafide workers comp condition in the federal employee handbook.

Absolutely.

I can hear it now, "Why, if I hadn't been 'ordered' to stay home, I'd be right at work - so since I'm following orders, it's only fair that I get paid and not have to burn my personal time off."

LOL. Then Christie would have told them ALL to stay home. You have to love the way these union dopes just play into Christie's hands. I was worried for a while but he now has the upper hand to continue reforms. I hope he doesn't blow it.

Who does that ruthless, cold-hearted S.O.B think he IS, anyway? Expecting state employees to report to WORK on a Monday morning? Why, that’s just plain mean!

That would be a great place to start cutting spending.

So for the many hundreds if not thousands who COULD get to work with no trouble, they should have just not gone due to some had trouble? I like how the gov thinks. That is certainly the way it is done in the private sector.

I love it when government talks about non-essential people. Why do they have jobs in the first place?

requiring state employees to report to work

Wow! Imagine that . . . requiring state employees to report to work!

I'll never forget a few years ago when I had 2 guys working for me that got union fever from the shop steward. There were rumors of a work stoppage, and these two union dudes threatened me with giving me only 4 hours a day of work . . . at which time I jumped for joy and told them that right now they're only giving me 2 hrs a day anyway.
