NASA says astronauts may need to abandon the International Space Station this fall.
If Russian Soyuz rockets remain grounded beyond mid-November, there will be no way to launch new crews before the current residents are supposed to leave.
A Russian supply ship was destroyed during liftoff last week. The rocket is similar to what's used to launch astronauts.
NASA space station program manager Mike Suffredini said Monday that flight controllers could keep a deserted space station operating indefinitely.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
If I was President, I would have pulled the plug on the shuttle too. As Obama did, and as McCain would have done.
Maybe space aliens will feed them.
Technically, I believe such sales would be against international law. But I'd sell the land just the same.
Ares/Orion would have done nothing to prevent this. It was years behind schedule and billions over budget. The only way out in the near term is commercial crew.
Thats OK.
I’ve stored a pair of Saturn V’s in my backyard, biding time until the America-hating Communists are out of office.
Just let me know America, when you want to return to your innovation-driven, can-do, courageous roots.....
There are two Soyuz capsules docked to the station, they serve as lifeboats for emergencies, and will be used to bring crew back. No one is stranded, but they can't get new crew up until the resolve the issue with the Russian launcher.
That would sure be better than NASA scientists sitting around writing papers on how space aliens are going to destroy the people on this planet in order to stop globull warming!!
(eye roll)
Yep! Things are now going as planned: REGULATE , CONTROL , AND DESTROY.
I believe Professor You Lie promised “Change” is going along on schedule. He really is an effective leader.
Yep, the pied piper of the debtocrats, counter-culture folks and the Liberal Intelligentsia Elite ( L.I.E. ) promised “ Change “ and change is upon us now!
The plug was pulled before Obama became president and I don’t believe plugging it back in was an option. But, he might have shown just a bit more, not sure what the word is, something some presidents had before they just became run of the mill check dispensers to the worst among us.
Thanks.
No lives were lost constructing the ISS.
“So how do they get down?”
According to Wiki..
As of 23 August 2011, there are 3 spacecrafts docked with the ISS.
Russia Soyuz TMA-21 Expedition 27/28
Russia Progress M-10M Progress 42 Cargo
Russia Soyuz TMA-02M Expedition 28/29
I could have predicted this without a rubber chicken.
With America out of the game, the rest of the world chickens out. American Exceptionalism fuels the world’s confidence. Because when your @ss is in the sling, you expect the Americans to come-a-runnin’.
And we always do. It’s who we are. Just ask the Chilean miners.
Not arguing, but what about Challenger/Columbia.
I think people are mixing up shuttle with ISS.
Hmmm...salvage opportunity?
I agree, they are mixing them up. Kinda sad.
Challenger was lost before one piece of the ISS was launched.
Columbia, because if its weight was never able to reach the ISS.
They have a Soyuz capsule at the ISS as an emergency lifeboat. It is my understanding that the Soyuz capsules have an effective life of 6 months, so they must "rotate" the capsules at least that often.
Back to Jurrasic park. Can’t wait until we discover fire and the wheel
