NOAA said that maximum average wind speeds at landfall were 85 MPH, hurricane winds stretching outwards for 90 miles. In fact, only two locations even had gusts over 85 MPH.

In 2011 dollars, Hurricane Andrew - A direct hit of a Cat 5 storm - caused about $41B in damages ($26B in 1992 dollars).

So you, or someone else out there, is trying to tell me that this storm has caused more damage than Hurricane Andrew?

Maybe the term “damages” has been re-written a few times since 1992 if this is indeed the case.

Bullcrap? Really? You wanna pay the $$$ for the cleanup of my downed downed trees you “Richard”? Our entire town is only one of many that have 100% customers out of power. Looks like it could be weeks (plural) before we’re back.

Side comments like yours never cease to amaze me.

There was serious flooding, a lot of people are without electricity, and there have been deaths. People sound like they’re disappointed it wasn’t worse.

No one is saying that Irene wasn’t a large storm, or that it didn’t dump tremendous amounts of rain, or that damage and consequential deaths didn’t occur. No one is saying that people shouldn’t have prepared for Irene, or treated it with due respect.

The problem is that Irene probably wasn’t a hurricane when it hit NC, it certainly wasn’t one when it passed NJ, nor was it one when it hit NY. The NHC waited way too long before downgrading it to a tropical storm.

The question is why.

Methinks there was a political reason to keep a tropical storm classified as a hurricane.

100% agree NVA.

I’d be embarrassed in front of anyone from the Gulf Coast making some of the statementsI heard on the air this week. I heard a little bit of Cuomo’s presser — praising NYers about their reacion to all the warnings. I half expected him to say next, “Of course NYers are smarter and better behaved than southern folks.”

I didn’t hear anywhere near the hysteria over the tornado that hit Tuskaloosa, for instance. Far more damage and loss of life. Is that just because all of our news is centered in NY?

And as always, if Obama hadn’t take the steps he took, the damage would have been much worse.

Eye came ashore about 60 miles from where I live. Quite a bit of damage but nothing compared to the folks in Joplin. We are already cleaning up to the point you barely notice a hurricane went through. We have some large trees down and homes damaged but no reason for Obama to come down. Pamlico was hit hard and along Outer Banks. Even with minor damage expect Obozo to visit NC is critical State for his reelection.

Mississippi had a 22' storm surge

Mississippi had a 27' storm surge. N.O. had a 22' storm surge. What do you think breached the levees? That's right, Bush had them blown up...

Who is trying to shut people up and who is saying there are “victims”. We all know the media and The White House are one and the same, but, again, you have unprecedented flooding, mudslides, dams collapsing, billions in damages. Surely you could let the floods subside a little before you start ripping everybody up.

People sound like they’re disappointed it wasn’t worse.

RD doesn't suggest that tropical storms aren't dangerous and serious events. He merely questions whether the proclamations from government officials that Irene packed hurricane force winds when it made landfall.

RD went further than I would when he called H. Irene hype "BULLCRAP", but it seems that all RD is claiming is that the evidence suggests that H. Irene didn't pack hurricane force winds. I don't read RD's comments as suggesting he wished H. Irene was stronger. I read his comments as suggesting that he wished government officials were more honest about H. Irene's wind speed.

Furthermore, we get more property damage and loss of life every year through various tornadoes in the upper midwest and it barely makes the air, or print. We had an entire town wiped out in Wisconsin 2 years ago, and they didn’t even qualify as a disaster area.

Heck no, NOT me, I posted the link because I thought it was the most insanely ludicrous thing I have seen yet. I think they will try to give those blue states that much money, that much damage, sureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, not even a fraction of that.

Actually, it octuples rather than only quadruples.

Wind energy increases as the cube of the wind speed multiple, not the square.

We all put up with this unconstitutional crap, just some of us recognize it and throw the bums out of office every chance we get.

How many in the dark live where laws or HOA prevent them from having generators too?

We empathize with you on the power and tree issue...

In 2004, Hurricane/TS Frances and then Hurricane/TS Jean (2 weeks apart) blew through N Central Florida with heavy rain and hurricane force gusts. The combination of rain/gusts dropped 50 ft oaks into homes and streets - taking power, phone, and cable lines with them. We have well water-so no power means no water.

It took 2 weeks after each Hurricane to get power, phone, cable restored and it took a week to clear the trees, broken limbs, and haul them away.

Hang in there...things will get better!

Unless you have a problem with me ‘ripping up’ Obama, the leftists and their agenda....then you shouldn’t have a problem with what some of us are saying and/or questioning. It is a FACT that our science in this country and overseas has been CORRUPTED.It is a FACT that our media has been CORRUPTED. It is a FACT that most of the democrat party has been CORRUPTED. It is a FACT that Obama is CORRUPT.

It is important to document and question possible fraud and/or corruption while it is going on and to see what is happening in front of our eyes. This country is being destroyed by something other than ‘natural disasters’. It is called socialism/communism/marxism. Pick which ever one you prefer because it is going on every where one looks.
