There was serious flooding, a lot of people are without electricity, and there have been deaths. People sound like they’re disappointed it wasn’t worse.

RD doesn't suggest that tropical storms aren't dangerous and serious events. He merely questions whether the proclamations from government officials that Irene packed hurricane force winds when it made landfall.

RD went further than I would when he called H. Irene hype "BULLCRAP", but it seems that all RD is claiming is that the evidence suggests that H. Irene didn't pack hurricane force winds. I don't read RD's comments as suggesting he wished H. Irene was stronger. I read his comments as suggesting that he wished government officials were more honest about H. Irene's wind speed.

I don’t think it is disappointment it wasn’t worse, I don’t think that is it at all...I think it is the around the clock coverage that has been hyping this weather event to a breathless level that bothers people, and I agree.

It is unseemly, this strange, contrived crisis atmosphere. I think it is harmful in the long run.

I think we can hold both the concept of thinking this thing is overhyped and simultaneously praying for those who are being affected by this.
