At a ceremony to honor the opening of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in our nation's capital Friday, the late civil rights leader's daughter Bernice made an historical error that would evoke tremendous ridicule and derision if she were a conservative.
BERNICE KING: "But as I close, I close with the recognition that daddy is standing, Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence. Daddy being remembered as standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nations capital."

As a side note, given the way King betrayed his family, it's not really surprising that his legitimate achievements and aspirations mean nothing to most of them. --------------------------

Even if she had gotten the reference right and associated President Lincoln with the Emancipation Proclamation, there remained a poorly veiled, dismissive insult in the phrasing of the standing/sitting comparison. If she had wanted to celebrate her fathers’ arrival into distinguished company, fine. But to denigrate others to elevate her father is without class.

Wonder if Bernice King knows about these Lincoln’s statements:
I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races. I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will ever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. ... And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.
Abraham Lincoln
I have never had the least apprehension that I or my friends would marry negroes if there was no law to keep them from it, but as Judge Douglas and his friends seem to be in great apprehension that they might, if there were no law to keep them from it, I give him the most solemn pledge that I will to the very last stand by the law of this State, which forbids the marrying of white people with negroes.
Abraham Lincoln
There is no room for two distinct races of white men in America, much less for two distinct races of whites and blacks. I can conceive of no greater calamity than the assimilation of the Negro into our social and political life as an equal... Within twenty years we can peacefully colonize the Negro in the tropics and give him our language, literature, religion, and system of government under conditions in which he can rise to the full measure of manhood. This he can never do here. We can never attain the ideal Union our fathers dreamed, with millions of an alien, inferior race among us, whose assimilation is neither possible nor desirable.
Abraham Lincoln

MLK Jr. was a known alcoholic who bought moonshine in the countryside south of Atlanta from my father in law back in the early 60’s. First he came for it until he hit it big time. Then he sent his possy in their long black caddy.

This is not the first time a blunder of this magnitude has been spoken by Bernice.

I remember that back before black people decided to change into a political party other folks were generally more polite about such lapses in speech or deficiencies in knowledge.
Still, I agree with you. Cut her some slack. I doubt she gets up and does a speech of any kind on any given day. It's a chore not always done perfectly.
