Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday dismissed as "cheap shots" the criticism leveled at him and others in Vice President Dick Cheney's memoir.
It was the latest volley in a clash that stretches back to their first years in the George W. Bush administration.

Colin Powell made the same mistake every Conservative turned Socialists makes.
He cares more about what the Washington media establishment thinks about him then his own convictions. All it takes is a book and a few cocktail parties and you are hooked.
Doesn’t matter if you are a general or a child from Cuba.
Hold on here, when public figures open the mouth they become fair game. I think your comment even adds more suspicion to the question. If your spouse knew something was so important to you why wouldn’t they want you to not only have a dream but fulfill it? They don’t Sarah Palin off the hook why should Powell be any different?
To be fair, no matter the color or gender, every ‘conservative of the moment’ eventually gets torn to shreds here at FR.
Except Sarah Palin, of course. Her endorsement of John McLame was out of “loyalty”, no matter how destructive McLame as been to this country as a US senator. I’m not sure why you chose to focus on color of skin, because if Reagan were running this year, there would be FReepers ripping him to shreds while still holding a candle for Sarah Palin.

He seems particularly offended that Powell has said that some in the intelligence community knew “that some of these sources were not good,” “didn’t speak up,” and “that devastated me.”
Rumsfeld fires back that the secretary of State had once been “the most senior military officer in our country” and no one else in the administration had “even a fraction of his experience” on intelligence matters. “Powell was not duped or misled by anybody, nor did he lie about Saddam’s suspected WMD stockpiles. And here’s speculation by _me_ that will certainly make folks here squirm (and attack me):
If for some reason Barack Obama had chosen to run as a _Republican_, spouting platitudes essentially little different than his usual bombast, those very same “supporters” of folk like Powell, Rice, and Steele would have touted _him_ as yet another example of “the right kind of black” who should have been elevated within Republican ranks and be considered as a potential presidential candidate!

The problem with your misplaced sympathy for Alma Powell is the fact that she was a long-term military wife.
I get that as you move up in the ranks you are less and less likely to die, but really. We face the possibility of our spouses’ death every time they deploy.
The Powells married in 1962 and he was subsequently sent to Vietnam. So she’s faced the possibility of death. I seriously doubt a potential assassination would bother her, especially since the odds are much less and he would have a phalax of bodyguards around everywhere.

I am not a fan of his politics, but I think I can appreciate that his wife probably said,
“Look pal, I married you and spent 30 years or so following your sorry butt around the world. I don’t want to do that any more. I don’t want the BS associated with politics. So, get a good job, sit down and shut up. This is MY time.”
Since the administration and the press decided to laud the wrong general following Gulf I, and pretty much dump on the guy who won it, I've considered Powell to be a relic of over eager politicians.
(Translation: Wouldn't offer him a used kleenex.)
But there have been a lot of not-so-good Sec's of State and more than a lot of crummy RNC executives. I expect that being black and not thinking or acting like a good African American democrat is expected to act puts a whole lot of strain on people. I think that Rice and even Steele were severely limited by that.
On the other hand, Clarence Thomas is far less limited because he is a judge doing what a judge does...he isn't acting in an unfamiliar role.
(He's also a pretty solid guy with pretty thick skin.)
