If your spouse knew something was so important to you why wouldn’t they want you to not only have a dream but fulfill it?

That's something that cuts both ways. If your spouse is beside herself with abject terror that fulfilling your dream is going get yourself assassinated (which was Alma Powell's worry), wouldn't you perhaps realign your dreams to help ease their piece of mind?

Or maybe I'm just weird in seeing marriage as a partnership where both sides' dreams (and fears) need to be balanced through understanding and compromise.

The problem with your misplaced sympathy for Alma Powell is the fact that she was a long-term military wife.

I get that as you move up in the ranks you are less and less likely to die, but really. We face the possibility of our spouses’ death every time they deploy.

The Powells married in 1962 and he was subsequently sent to Vietnam. So she’s faced the possibility of death. I seriously doubt a potential assassination would bother her, especially since the odds are much less and he would have a phalax of bodyguards around everywhere.

I am not a fan of his politics, but I think I can appreciate that his wife probably said,

“Look pal, I married you and spent 30 years or so following your sorry butt around the world. I don’t want to do that any more. I don’t want the BS associated with politics. So, get a good job, sit down and shut up. This is MY time.”

Not buying it. If that was her real fear he wouldn’t have been Secretary of State. He was exposed almost as much as a President. And would’t he have been 4th in line to become President? He could not have accepted that position without accepting the responsibility of succession of the Presidency upon a crisis. However, I don’t believe the public vetting process is as involved for Secretary of State.

Alma Powell's idea that Colin would be assassinated speaks to her ignorance and prejudice of America. Did she also say she has never been proud of her country?

A barely American black guy ran with an African name and won and he's gonna be ok. That response from Alma disgusts me and shows Colin was a fake.
