Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was

The truth is that the dire warning beforehand suited both politicians and journalists. Just as with the minor earthquake that shook the east coast last week causing no loss of life and virtually no damage, Irene became a huge story because it was where the media lived. For politicians, Irene was a chance to either make amends or appear in control. The White House sent out 25 Irene emails to the press on Saturday alone.

Actually I think it was a turn for the better. Love those great cars of yester-year.

Face time for the media and politicians who lie to us on a regular basis.
They use a “crisis” to draw people to them and their “power”.

Mine was a ‘67 Plymouth Fury III two-door. That thing went through alternators and universal joints regularly. Kind of soured me on Mopar until the last few years.
Now driving an ‘02 Ram PU that has 330K on it with no sign of giving up.

MSN does not cover the news anymore...it is politics and sob stories... ABC used to have a pretty decent overnight news show when Derek McGinty anchored it. Then they started getting jokey-hokey and now it's like tuning in to Rachael Ray, all Vagisil commercials and Lunesta and estrogen-soaked ad blocks that run unendingly ..... while the anchors fiddlefart around and tell off-color puns and gossip about celebs and TV shows. It's turned into Trashivision. Even CBS's fairly sobersided show is starting to catch the virus.
The only people doing straight news on late-night are, God help us, the Communist Chinese CCTV on their high-numbered HDTV channel here in Houston.

Guys, yeah, that's a '64 ..... learned to drive in one of those w/ dual controls. Think that one, from the trim level, is not a Galaxie 500 but maybe a Custom or a Galaxie-sans-500, a midlevel trim level in any case. Probably delivered with a 3-in-the-tree or a Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and a 289 or 390 (the 352 CID engine didn't appear until the 1965 model year, iirc). They had a 406 available, but wouldn't put it in a car like that one except on special order from a rum-runner.
The '63 had cylindrical taillight/fender flares, like the '61s but without the fins.

1965 was the big square redesign Yes, and they a) cut 500 lb. out of the car and b) added a lot of sound insulation to quiet the car down. Remember how they advertised that the interior of a Galaxie 500/XL in motion at 50 mph was quieter than a Rolls?
They also changed the engine lineup. I mentioned the 289 -- that was not available until '65, my mistake. In 1964 the base engine was the four-year-old 260, delivered in the early 64-1/2 Mustangs. (My dad test-drove a 1960 Ford station wagon equipped with a 3-in-the-tree and a 260. Not impressed! 'Course, he was used to our '57 Country Sedan with its "Thunder Road" 312 Police Interceptor that generated 265 BHP at 6000 RPM when equipped with a Rochester 4V carb ....)

I had forgotten that “Custom” designation Ford used. The best examples of them are the patrol cars used on the Andy Griffith Show. IIRC, they had a ‘61, ‘62, ‘63, ‘64 and ‘65.

Irene was a “Fake Cantorgasm”

Isn't that a '67 Dodge Coronet? Either that or (don't think so) a Plymouth Belvedere ..... we had one of the latter, a '66 fordor sedan, gold with gold interior, with a Slant Six (230? 245 CID? -- can't remember) that put out about 145 horse, something like that, only in a non-smogified, clean six that put out exactly the same oomph level as the Chevy 302 in my '85 Impala fleet car, with its Atrocity "slip-clutch" slush-pump with its hideous "fuel-saving" RPM excursions on every upshift .... what a joke ....
That Mopar was a nice car that could giddyap (had it up to 100 on the Interstate once, late one night), had good manners and worked well with its (becoming old-fashioned) three in the tree.

Yeah, they were the taxi/fleet/racecar/rumrunner models. Basic "Detroit iron" .... but you could put a hell of an engine in them if you wanted one!

How about this one?
Mine was a two-door with a 318 V-8. It would start shaking at 95 mph, but once you reached 110 mph, it would smooth out. I wish I still had it.

What data do those planes provide that isn't provided by doppler radar, ocean/sea buoys and satellites? Soundings to feed the models. Models are very hungry and that's why they doubled the number of weather balloons over part of CONUS during Irene. But that said, you are correct that they could get that info with drones.

It would start shaking at 95 mph, but once you reached 110 mph, it would smooth out. Oh, that was probably just the Goodyear rubber leaving. Once you were running on the belts, you were okay. ;)

In this case, memory and your image properties agree: It’s a ‘64. Galaxie 500 X/L I think ...... 500 for sure. Twodoor hardtop ..... looks like a 390 or better under the hood, judging by the spring sag in front.

The real reason this was hyped out of proportion was because the hurricane hit the major media markets of the United States. We had a much more serious hurricane named "Ike" here in Texas two years ago -- whole subdivisions were leveled to the ground. It barely registered on the national media radar.
Katrina only got covered ad nauseum because liberals used it as a mechanism to bash George Bush (witness the endless carping about New Orleans vs. the actual landfall area of south Mississippi, which recovered quickly and didn't whine about it). Any natural disaster here in "flyover country" gets maybe a 10 second mention on the national news.
