The scale of Hurricane Irene, which could cause more extensive damage along the Eastern Seaboard than any storm in decades, is reviving an old question: are hurricanes getting worse because of human-induced climate change?
The short answer from scientists is that they are still trying to figure it out. But many of them do believe that hurricanes will get more intense as the planet warms, and they see large hurricanes like Irene as a harbinger.

Cat 1 in August and the first hurricane to hit the U.S. in 3 years. Yawn.
It appears to be a relatively mild category 1 storm despite being a large one.

Reviving an old question: does the NYT still support the kind of fascism and tyranny it endorsed during WWII?
Remind me again how large an electric bill Algore has for his mansion.
Better safe than sorry, but I think they may have overreacted to Irene. We’ll see.
“I’m coming ‘lizabeth, this is the big one!”
/not
harbinger alert.
I think I would be more concerned about landfall across Long Island and points north. It looks like the center of the storm is back out over the water and depending on the water temps could strengthen.
Didn’t Katrina make landfall a couple of times as a relatively weak storm before coming ashore in the gulf?
Umm, if Global Warming were true, Irene would have intensived over the warm waters and warm air and slammed into the coast as a Category 4 or higher storm. The fact that Irene frittered out means the global is NOT warming.
They "underreacted" to Wilma in 2005. Everyone in my neighborhood lost their roof. It was a disaster, and we were prepared.
“Reviving an old question: does the NYT still support the kind of fascism and tyranny it endorsed during WWII?”
Maybe they can take that one on right after they explain how Walter Duranty’s Pulitzer shouldn’t be yanked.
That filthy rag wouldn’t have been good enough for Bin Laden’s toilet paper.
Statue of Liberty is going to get a head smack ... Its 80 MPH on the ground, but near 130 by her head for about 12 hours. Her head will rolling down the NJ Turnpike toward DC. A fitting trophy/tribute to our First Muslim President.
I see they didn’t include a comments section for this article. Maybe because they know they’d get raked over the coals?
Wrong question.
are hurricanes getting worse? The answer is NO.
Your premise that hurricanes are getting worse is wrong from the start, but you need this canard so you can try to blame it on bogus man made global warming.
Also, were your premise correct, again it is not, It doesn't matter because there would be nothing “man” could do about it.
Look at those fools who tried to cover a glacier to stop it from melting. First they had to reduce the size of their experiment because the costs and logistics were overwhelming. Mind you, they were only trying to cover an infinitesimal per centage of the glacier to start with.
Did it work? Yes! BUT..... they decided that the pollution and green house gasses they created doing the experiment (downsized as it was) was more destructive than the supposed good they had done. Not to mention this great big PLASTIC sheet (garbage) they now had on the landscape.
So, any mention of globull warming by these so-called “scientists” makes me laugh.
The cable new channels, OH MY GOD, we are all going to die.
48 straight hours of weather news, puke.
If they cannot forecast a Hurricane two days out, how do these pinheads figure they can use their “models” to forecast Global Warming?
