Sarah Palin's four-point plan on Libya
The Los Angeles Times' Top of the Ticket ^ | August 26, 2011 | Andrew Malcolm

President Obama may still be dining with the elite at fancy island restaurants on Martha's Vineyard, but Sarah Palin is pondering the future of Libya and wisely pushing to wind down American involvement in that latest military entanglement.

Palin may not be in the race for her party's 2012 presidential nomination, but the Republican former governor released her four-point Libya plan late Thursday night to her 3.2 million fans on Facebook. Her first concern is to protect U.S. interests in that troubled land.

"The fall of a tyrant and sponsor of terrorism is a great day for freedom-loving people around the world," she wrote. But then warned that the path to democracy is incomplete there and "we must make wise choices to ensure that our national interests are protected."

First, Palin said, the Obama White House must avoid celebrating too heartily and recall instead that tribal and sectarian fighting can erupt as it did in previous conflicts, such as in Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq....

On the Future of Libya
by Sarah Palin on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 1:02pm

We join the Libyan people in gratefulness as we hear of Col. Gaddafi’s defeat. The fall of a tyrant and sponsor of terrorism is a great day for freedom-loving people around the world. But the path to democracy in Libya is not complete, and we must make wise choices to ensure that our national interests are protected.

First, the White House needs to avoid triumphalism. Gaddafi may be gone, but the fighting may not be complete. As we’ve seen in Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, we must not celebrate too quickly. There are now mounting concerns that we will see tribal and sectarian fighting in Libya like we saw in Iraq. Let’s hope that is not the case, but it must be prepared for.

Second, we must be very concerned about the future government that will emerge to take Gaddafi’s place. History teaches that those with the guns usually prevail when a coalition overthrows a tyrant. We must remember that military power ultimately resides with the rebel commanders. This should be a source of some concern. The armed opposition to Gaddafi is an outgrowth of a group called Islamic Libya Fighting Group, and some rebel commanders admit that they have Al Qaeda links. The rebel fighters are from different tribes, and they have a variety of political views. Some are Islamists, some appear to favor some sort of western democracy. We should work through diplomatic means to help those who want democracy to come out on top.

That said, we should not commit U.S. troops or military assets to serve as peacekeepers or perform humanitarian missions or nation-building in Libya. Our military is already over-committed and strained, and a vaguely designed mission can be the first step toward a quagmire. The internal situation does not seem stable enough for U.S. forces to operate in a purely humanitarian manner without the possibility of coming under attack. Troop deployment to Libya would mean placing America’s finest in a potentially hostile zone that is not in our vital national security interest.

Finally, we must make sure that terrorist groups don’t try to co-opt the revolution, as Al Qaeda is trying to do in Syria. We should continue to use our intelligence assets to monitor the situation in Libya to ensure that potentially dangerous weapons are secured, and that terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda don’t gain a foothold in Libya.

People of Libya, be vigilant. May this opportunity be used to build a free and peaceful country.

- Sarah Palin

I wish she would’ve mentioned how there are no American interest in Libya and that we should’ve never been there in the 1st place.

The clear American interest in Libya is that it not become a terrorist enclave for exporting 9-11-style attacks at the perceived "foes of Islam" and/or "The Great Satan."

WOW...I am impressed with her depth of understanding on Libya. She continues to surprise me. I have read America By Heart, and am about 1/3rd of the way through Going Rogue. I truly believe that this woman is coming into her time. She is a fighter, and she like all of us here, refuse to believe that the American people will not come out of the woodwork to save their country.

The dems have accomplished part of their strategy. Make things so bad, that only the government can fix it. People for years just stuck their heads in the sand saying they did not see a leader worth following. Making a lesser of two evils vote year after year after year. My first election for president was Richard Nixon in 1968.

Sarah was brought on the political stage because that is where God intended her to be. God has a plan for each of us, but many of us are unable, or refuse to capitalize on the opportunities that open the right doors. We settle.

Sarah is not willing to settle...she wants to make America what America should be. WE THE PEOPLE will elect the next President...not the MSM!!!

I like the sentiments, but the headline is misleading. That is not a “plan”, those are at best “objectives”. A plan would explain how to meet each of those objectives.

I doubt she was saying it was a plan, nor was she trying to produce a plan. She was saying that whatever Obama DOES plan, it should be aimed at meeting those 4 objectives.

(Well, the first isn’t an “objective” so much as a thing to be avoided).

I think Sarah's main reason for tweeting this is so she can prove later on down the road that she knew better than Obama. IOW, proving she is wiser than The Annointed One on foreign policy -- or just about any policy for that matter.

Here's hoping she throws her hat into the ring. Then I won't have to hold my nose and vote for Gov. Perry.

“Troop deployment to Libya would mean placing America’s finest in a potentially hostile zone that is not in our vital national security interest.”

That is so right! Also, there wouldn’t be a clearly defined mission, and even if there was...the restrictive rules of engagement placed on our troops would make mission accomplishment impossible. Better to steer clear of that mess. It is going to be one long bloody civil war.

Not until we have proper leadership in the White House, and not until we are fully committed to an AMEROCENTRIC course of action that we will agressively carry out.....we should stay away.

Al-qa'ida can have all the Libya they want. They can all move there and cavort in the desert with the livestock for all I care. But if they mess with us, they need to understand that it won't be a 10 year nation building exercise. We'll bomb them until Chad has beachfront property. Then we'll go home.

If we had done that in the first place with Afghanistan or Iraq, fewer people would have died, the war would have been long over, and no one would dare start any trouble with us for a generation. We did that just fine in the Philippines, and the Moros raiders went silent for 70 years. It was brutal, but it created an era of peace in the interim.

But....but......but.... Dick Morris says she cannot get the nomination because people do not believe she is “electable” because the media has succeeded in demonizing her. And, if she did get the nomination, Obama would be reelected.

With Obama in office, "Libya as another Iran" may not be an unintended side effect.

I'm going to take off my angry hat for a second and take that a step further. People often laugh at the short-sightness of liberals that so willingly team up with Islamic fundamentalists. You'd think it would be dumb for them, because the Islamists will kill liberals by the acre once they are able. It's a terrible alliance composition. Liberals have no ability to resist their teammates aggression once they both win over conservatives.

The problem is that liberals hate Western society, both the defenders (conservatives) and the elites (themselves). They literally have a suicidal, self-destructive streak running through them that longs to be smashed in favor of something better. Something stronger. Something more pure. They lack the strength to fight and survive, but they don't want to die without destroying Western civilization first.

I think that any liberals alive on the day that Muslims take power will happily join them as Muslim converts, or be content with and understanding of their new masters as liberals are rounded up and slain. They won't want to die, but out of their hatred for all things of the old order, they'll understand.

The marxists useful idiots may be killed but those trying to usher in a marxist new world order believe that they will be “the last man standing”. Marxists are brutal. They have killed many millions if not billions. The muslims should look at Stalin and his ilk.

Why would an ex-governor who isn't planning on running write and release anything like this?

Clearly the pressure of a Perry candidacy has been the straw that broke the Moose's back. She's cracking, as I always knew she would.

WE NEED TO VOTE PERRY / JEB BUSH.

THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN.
