Dem bill aims to save state, local workers
The Hill ^ | August 26, 2011 | Mike Lillis

Posted on 08/26/2011 11:53:19 AM PDT by maggief

A top House Democrat introduced legislation Friday designed to help state and local governments retain and rehire workers amid the country's lingering jobs crisis.

Sponsored by Rep. George Miller (Calif.), senior Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee, the proposal would pump billions of dollars into local communities in order to stanch the hemorrhaging of government jobs that's been the trend throughout the year.

The proposal has a tough road ahead, as the Republican majority in the House is opposed to new stimulus spending as a solution to the jobs crisis. Indeed, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) suggested earlier this year that shedding government jobs is necessary to rein in deficits and improve the economy.

Miller, like most Democrats, thinks differently. He's arguing that, not only are local government workers vital for providing valuable community services, but keeping them employed will be essential if the country hopes to nibble away at an unemployment rate hovering stubbornly above 9 percent.

(snip)

Miller's proposal provides roughly $37.5 billion for local governments, and an additional $24 billion for states to pay teachers, policemen and firefighters. The funds, to be allocated over a two-year span, are designed to preclude future layoffs – or even allow the rehiring of fired workers – as governments grapple with budget troubles in the down economy.

If the RNC doesn’t make this into a campaign commercial then they’re utterly incompetent. “The Democrats want to raise your taxes so they can spend that money to hire more local government workers. Houston, we have a problem.”

Vladimir Illyich Miller can take his government union workers bailout bill and stick it where the Califoria sun don’t shine.

“The Democrats want to raise your taxes so they can spend that money to hire more local government workers.”

needs to be amended slightly - they want to higher more government UNION workers whose union dues, paid by your tax dollars, go straight into the re-election campaigns of democrats.

Has California finally legalized pot smoking?

Bzzzt! Wrong answer! They need to let state and local govt employees go, not borrow to hire more of them.

This, along with the NLRB poster rule, is the kinda of crap we’re going to be seeing this election year. The RATS are desperate, clearly pandering to the unions after Trumpka delivered his threat.

We get "targeted", "focused", temporary, and freshly-printed aid to government jobs, when the private sector is screaming for broad-based, systemic, and permanent relief from burdensome taxes and regulations.

It's as if they're saying "you private sector people, you'll get yours when we spend it.....if we spend it......now that we think about it, since it's temporary, we'd be idiots to spend it."

That’s what they did with the last batch of money they got. Gotta keep the gov workers employed so they can work on dim campaigns and vote dim in the next election.

Most of the debt and regulatory problems are caused by local government sucking on federal funding. Think about that the next time locals intrude on a neighbor’s family or property rights or increase another unconstitutional tax called a fee.

Over the years congress has happily relinquised authority to presidents - moreso than usual to Obama. He has used it to pursue an unconstitutional agenda while both he and congress ignore the expressed will of the people they represent. It will not be easy for congress to regrow a backbone.

"We have become a goddamned cargo cult. We think that the great god “Washington” has money, and when we send our chief up there, that Washington is going to rain money down on us. Are you crazy? The nation is broke, and Hawaii is a tiny, eentsy bitsy row of dots afloat far away on a distant ocean.

There ain’t no more Washington money. Dan Inouye is not Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. The game is up. I told you and I told you and I told you. About the economy. About the ERS. About the EUTF. About all of it..and now the day has come — and after ten years you are not ready."
