UPPER DARBY, Pa. - As police in Upper Darby, Pa., search for more young people involved in last week's flash mob, more adults are thinking about arming themselves with guns.
People are talking about how afraid they are of being caught in the path one of these flash mobs while they're out minding their own business, and they want to be ready.
Law enforcement officials say it's a nightmare in the making because ordinary, private citizens are getting gun permits.
"We have people now that are fearful and carrying guns because of children. How sad is that?" Upper Darby police Captain George Rhoades said.
He said it's all legal.
"It's all self-defense," Rhoades said.
He says about 10 to 20 applications are processed every week in Upper Darby.
Rhoades says with that many people "carrying" and the violent actions of these flash mobs, the worst is bound to happen.
"Now we have this mentality, 'I'm not going to retreat. I'm not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to be a vigilante and take care of the problem myself,'" he said.
That means flash mob children could be dead, and the would-be victims may have the right, but Rhoades is appealing to everybody to think twice.

Welcome to FR
Unfortunately most large cities have uber liberal mayors who appoint uber liberal police chiefs.
Did anybody else catch the horrible news reporting that was openly sympothetic with the gun grabbing captain?
Why can’t cell phone “data services” (including texting) be disabled in these cities?
Upper Darby Police Captain George Rhoades:
He looks like Ming The Merciless.
Shave your face, nitwit. You're a post middle-aged man.
Probably because of that pesky First Amendment to the US Constitution.
Already armed, already increased my "basic load" of ammo when mobile.
I'm not "baiting a hole" with 40oz malt liquor and Newports but neither will I retreat nor accept any threat of violence without a good amount of deadly force offered in return.
If you don't want your little heathen bastards brought home in a bag keep them home and teach them civility. I'll teach them for you but my lessons come at a dear price.
I’ve already thought this through and concluded that no one is going to beat up the OldPossum. I have a 14-round S&W pistol that I will immediately use as they prepare to hurt me. And I won’t have one tinge of regret for doing so.
Well...if you let the kid in the street decide...you may not have a need for money, you may be dead.
I won’t. But others will let that kid decide. I consider the nest egg another member of the family.
Hmmm. Is it just me, or is this trash mob thing a northern affair? I don’t recall hearing about any of these happening south of the Virginia state line. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t recall hearing about even one.
One guess as to why.
You do NOT want that solution. It is a Pandora's Box of despotic suppression.
No violence please...Just a simple, quiet, non-violent double tap for each rodent is all that is necessary.
I've not heard of one.
“...flash mob children could be dead...”
“Children???” Please, Officer... spare me.
There’s a really old saying...goes back centuries...
“If’n YOU Don’t eff wid nobody...nobody gonna eff wid YOU BACK!”
These little monsters evidently never learned that lesson, and somebody, somewhere is going to TEACH them that lesson one of these days if they keep it up.
Citizens arming up, and that fact being widely publicized, is the BEST thing that can happen. People waking up to their RIGHTS is NEVER a bad thing.
“...then ARREST the little bastards ya dumb sh!t en masse...”
...and lay a nightstick upside their heads while your at it, for good measure.
Damn, where’s Hizzoner Frankie Rizzo when we need him!! Ha!
I don’t think that the cops should be afraid, but I do think that the mobsters should be. The fact is, either the Police put a stop to this or people WILL RIGHTLY take the law into their own hands. Frankly, and I’m not speaking against the police here, I don’t really think that the police are capable of stopping this activity. It will take a strong resistance to put the thugs in their place (and maybe a few casualties).
“Police forces have lost their most important competitive advantage.”
Yes, they have. They’ve also lost the will or ability to do the job in many instances. So let me pose the question: why do I or my family need them? Why should I pay ever increasing taxes for “protection” that won’t respond or can’t respond quick enough? Nostalgia?
Lots of things become obsolete over time. Horses and buggies, betamaxes, land line phones, vacuum tube radios, etc. Perhaps police are finding their obsolescence as well. They’re a relatively recent phenomenon anyway.
Not significant to the thread but here's a little Clint Eastwood music for y'all...
