DETROIT–American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. dealt the United Auto Workers a second blow Thursday by announcing the closure of its New York gear-making plant after union rank-and-file members failed to ratify a new contract late last month.
The Cheektowaga plant, employing about 100 hourly and salaried workers, will be shut sometime after Feb. 25, American Axle spokesman Christopher Son said. The announcement comes a month after the company said it will close its Detroit plant after workers there failed to agree to wage cuts. That closure will throw about 300 people out of work.

Good thread. Union employees out of jobs should pool all of their assets and open up their own businesses in their areas of expertise. Would they unionize?
I’ve always considered myself an independent contractor. I never liked being in the parasitic, sloth-protecting unions when I worked in those union jobs. If a company was treating me poorly or its management was giving me a hard time, I would leave and take my talent and work ethic somewhere else. It would be their loss, not mine. I’ve always tried to set a very high standard (much higher than union and most non-union companies) for all aspects of my employment in any job. When I work, I work. I’m setting the standard.
Would love to know if the CEO and managers took a 50 percent cut, you know to lead by example.
It’s easy to sit behind a keyboard and exhort workers to watch their wages be cut to under 30K a year. And then expect them to take another cut. Sure they can go find another job, because there are so many available.
If we expect people to work and not mooch off the government, noy homeschool our kids because government schools are endoctrination centers, then there have to be family wage jobs out there.
My husband and I work three jobs between us. And that doesn’t count the homeschooling I do as well. Thank God one of Dh’s jobs is a union job, because, otherwise, we would be on government assistance as well. It’s not like we have a cushy life, but just to provide a lower middle class lifestyle for our children.

One or two managers and some executives, taking a pay cut wouldn't save many jobs. And using your words....it's easy to sit behind a keyboard and say that.
My point is plain. What has changed to allow this to happen? I contend it's been government..and unions. Which I think are one in the same...too much of the time.

What's good for mankind is freedom. Unions are hardly a friend of freedom.

I have a business opportunity for you two. Very little money down required, just a computer, internet connection and minimal programming skills.
The opportunity is to write some silly little computer games like you would see on Kongregate. The project should take less than 6 months if you are halfway competent. A year if you aren’t competent.
The average return on these games is multiple tens of thousands a month for a few years and possibly a lot more if they get popular.

Driving into Orlando for the first time last month (for the first family vacation that didn't involve visiting relatives, my kids are 15 & 8), I was struck by the fact that all that was there, and all those people were working there and living there due to the dreams and efforts of one man, one greedy fat cat.

Haven’t you ever considered that freedom and capitalism are good for mankind? Nope, you probably haven’t.
You should probably push away from the computer now and get your lazy butt down to the union hall so you can sing some good old worker songs with your fat, lazy union buddies.

Was that the old “Ann Page” packaging plant out in Elmira? Yes, that place was huge. Believe it was closed for at least 20 years or more.
Unions can share the blame but also you can blame regulations, taxes, etc. I’m amazed they lasted as long as they have in an anti-business state like NY. Try to open a small business in this state and you’ll be buried quickly in red tape to beat the band.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of leaches. If you get a Union job, be aware that sooner or later you will be on strike or unemployed because of the Union and their ridiculous demands that bankrupted the employer.
As I said 20 years ago, globalization means that third world workers will have to make more and US workers less. No one will ultimately be paid one cent more than they are worth.
