AMES, Iowa – Aug. 17, 2011 – The bridge carrying Iowa 9 over the Mississippi River at Lansing in Allamakee County is closed to traffic in both directions, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

During a regular inspection, the consultant found a crack in the floor beam under the bridge deck. Upon discovery, the bridge was closed immediately.

It is unknown at this time the duration of the closure. The bridge inspection will continue during the next two days. The Iowa DOT is in the process of developing a repair procedure, which will determine the duration of the closure.

Presently, traffic is being redirected. Follow the marked detour when posted. The Iowa DOT will provide additional information as soon as it becomes available.

This is certainly going to fit in well when Obama says we have to fix our infrastructure as he lays out in September how he is going to spend our next trillion dollars we don’t have, to employ millions of U.S. Citizens.

If he had spent some of the $4.5 trillion in debt he ran up over his first two years, on infrastructure, he wouldn’t have to propose it now.

It’s an old metal, open grate narrow 2 lane bridge with steep ramps at both ends. I drive it at least monthly.

I know - love that bridge. Fond childhood memories of Grandparents’ cabin North of Lansing... fishing... been over that bridge hundreds if not thousands of times.

So you’re the one that broke it?

Obama wants an infrastructure bank...

We have one, it is called the highway trust fund, money from gas taxes and user fees.

This is the same trust fund that has been raided every year for “other” purposes.

And the new one will be different how?

Nice. I’m often called to a customer in New Albin just upriver from there as well as Desoto across the Big Muddy.

Did the Obama buses perchance take that route lately?

Something like 30% skimmed right off the top of the highway trust fund for other purposes. Then we have to pay for things like public transportation. Highways come last.

The problem isn’t that America is broke, its that they have far too much money to act irresponsibly with. Kinda like spoiled rich kids.

Stop reading my mind! You're creeping me out.

Yes, this is...uh...serendipitous for O-blame-a, isn't it.

No - Dear Leader’s Misery Tour left Decorah, IA then went off towards Dubuque, and then Quad Cities & into Illinois.

I just crossed that bridge at least ten times last week. Lansing had it’s annual Fish Days festival last weekend. No telling how many people used that bridge last week but guessing from the number of people I saw during the three day celebration, it was a bunch.
