According to a CIA insider, the agency had a strong hand in creating, orchestrating and exploiting Operation Fast and Furious.
The CIAs motive is clear enough: The U.S. government is afraid the Los Zetas drug cartel will mount a successful coup detat against the government of Felipe Calderon.
Founded by ex-Mexican special forces, the Zetas already control huge swaths of Mexican territory. They have the organization, arms and money needed to take over the entire country.
Former CIA pilot Robert Plumlee and former CIA operative and DEA Director Phil Jordan recently said the brutally efficient Mexican drug cartel has stockpiled thousands of weapons to disrupt and influence Mexicos national elections in 2012. Theres a very real chance the Zetas cartel could subvert the political process completely, as it has throughout the regions it controls.
In an effort to prevent a Los Zetas takeover, Uncle Sam has gotten into bed with the rival Sinaloa cartel, which has close ties to the Mexican military.

--I find it hard to believe we would need to "arm" a group with close ties to the Mexican military--
--as far as I can tell, this was an attempt by the malAdministration to provide an excuse to impose gun control domestically---
When did this 747 allegedly enter the U.S.?
EVERY aspect of Truman’s “National Security Act of 1947” (CIA, DoD) has turned out to be a First Class ClusterSwive!
It's just too similar to Bill Clinton’s buddies the Chinese shipping full auto weapons into the US during the 1996 election.
I believe the intent is to influence the outcome of the 2012 US elections, not Mexican.
Panetta was hugely opposed to CIA ops in support of the Contras, back in that day, and congressional Democrat control over this administration is legendary. Still, hypocrisy is nothing new to that Party within that Party. It might explain Panetta's promotion as well. It implicates this president in the whole FUBAR situation.
How convenient!
Set up some anonymous spook to take the fall, and then of course all of the hearings have to be closed-door and classified.
Buy this one and I have a Chinese made Bay Bridge I’d like to sell ya.
Its quite natural that people are simply seeking a competent thoughtful purpose or leader where none exists. We seek a mastermind rather than accept that these things are almost random or the end of the fiscal year spend out project. A perfect example of a “Who’s your daddy?” exercise in projection so to speak. Sad but we have Zero leader.
"We were trying to save Mexico!"
I agree, Fast and Furious was an attempt to bolster the claim in the US that guns are bad, assault weapons are evil and should be restricted. We would not be arming the Sinaloa cartel to fight a civil war by buying semi auto rifles 3 or 4 at a time from local gunshops. We would be sending boatloads of military grade weapons, which is what we have done all over the world. this is a poor attempt at a cover story, and only a fool would buy into it.
"In February 2010, I started The Truth About Guns (TTAG). While Im committed to Americans right to bear arms, I am open to all sides of all arguments on all gun-related issues. In other words, Im a family man first, an American second, a journalist third and then a gun owner."A "journalist before a gun owner" tells it all. Just what gun owners need a "gun website" advancing the journalist take on the gun rights and gun issues.
Similarly, in this article, the author does not even notice the main player in Fast and Furious, Holder's DOJ. And yet it is the DOJ that controls the ATF (along with the FBI) and is the department that enforces all federal gun laws. It is throught the DOJ that the anti-gun is implemented.
So, while the CIA may well have been involved, leaving out the fact that Holder's DOJ put the local AUSAs (not the ATF) in charge of the operations, should cause gun owner to suspect Farago's journalistic agenda.
the anti-gun is implemented = the anti-gun agenda is implemented
I’ve been wondering when someone was going to ask about the CIA’s possible involvement...
What’s the difference? Zetas or anyone else in the Mexican government, they are all drug cartels.
The theory is that the CIA was worried about a drug cartels growing power, so they empowered.........a drug cartel ?
Wait, what ??????????
Drug cartel controlling government is bad, to prevent them, we armed another drug cartel, which would then be able to control the government which would be bad........This makes sense ?
Thats like opening the door of your house to bloods so that you can keep crips out of your house, because you don't want gangs in your house.
