JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. A civilian employee was injured by a bear he encountered on the base Thursday afternoon.
It happened around 12:45 p.m. as the man, in his 50s, was walking his dog in an area called the Engineers Bluff, which is southwest of the main base area. A JBLM spokesman describes it as a heavily forested area.
The man was chased out by the bear, but he fell to the ground. The bear took a swipe at the man as it ran past.
The employee was treated for cuts and scrapes to his arm and leg at Madigan Army Hospital.
The area was cordoned off as a search was conducted for the bear by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The spokesperson did not know Friday morning if the bear had been captured.
Spotting bears at JBLM isnt considered an unusual occurrence because of the large wooded area on base property. Three bears have been located and trapped in the last 45 days.

Another bear that hasn't learned that humans are at the top of the food chain.

If an unwanted bear can get on base, so can unwanted people.

If Sarah Palin would stop hunting in Alaska, the poor bear wouldn’t need to migrate south. She’s killing their food up there.

Where was the bear ‘running past’ TO? Was it chasing the dog? Did it eat it? So many threads left untied.

Bears freak me out - had one waltz through the back yard one late morning last week - on the back patio and around the house (with my dog inside - thank goodness- barking his fool head off)-just taking a stroll without a care in the world- oblivious to any noise or commotion - all 200+ lbs of him.
Everyone says they are ‘harmless’ and scare easily - well, I’m glad my dog and I were not outside that moment.

No, it was woods and we all know what the bears does in the woods, and the swap was boo boo trying to grab the pic a nick basket.

I’m actually quite surprised I have yet to see one in my area.
I’ve seen tracks at the White river about two miles as the crow flies from here.
A female got hit and killed on Hwy 18 in Auburn last year...

It sounds like this bear was just looking for a dance partner.

We are buying a new car tomorrow, because a bear molested, mangled and munched hubby’s old car. So much that the insurance company declared it a total loss!

Bad Bruin Behavior (BBB) is usually a function of a diet deficient in heavy metals.
BBB may be cured with an injection or three of Pb. Biological activity of the Pb may be enhanced if the rapid injection is coated with a surface layer of Cu.
