In past few decades, the U.S. Air Force has spent untold billions researching and developing a family of stealth fighter jets that are supposed to be generations ahead of any dogfighters in the sky.

But after building more than 170 F-22 Raptors and a handful of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, not a single one is available for service. The Air Force currently has zero flyable stealth fighters. None.

Reminds me of the old cold war air force joke that went something like this:
“In the future, the USA will develop a multi-role fighter/bomber that will single-handedly be able to defeat the entire Soviet Block Air Force... and we will only be able to afford ONE of them!”

And like the current defenders of the F-22 program, they'll tell us that one's enough, because it'll beat everything else in the world with one hand tied behind the pilot's back.

Numbers aren't everything, but they definitely count in war.

The USSR had it right in the Cold War. Their planes were not as technologically advanced as ours, but they made up for it with overwhelming numbers of them.

The Russians also expected that they'd take HUGE losses against western airforces. This is another reason that they designed things to be cheap. Another consequence was that their pilots didn't get much actual stick-time. Training was lower.

Russian military hardware was "rugged" but that doesn't mean that the maintenance hours per flight hour were any better.
