Virginia Tech Alert claims person with a gun spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.
Tech asking people on campus to stay inside, secure doors.
Police conducting search now.
WSLS's Ken Heineck is on the way to Virginia Tech now. More information as we get it.
A real threat or just an hysterical reaction to an open carry?
I wonder if it’s going to be someone with a legally-possessed, licensed, holstered sidearm.
Students were also asked to tie each other up and remain quiet while awaiting whatever happens next.
Perhaps he only wishes to put the beef stroganoff out of its misery...
most campuses have rules against having guns there
At 9:09 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun. They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.
Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from VTPD, Blacksburg PD and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject.
At one time it was a Federal law, not sure if it is now.
It was a response to the Texas Tower shooter (Whitman?)
I thought guns weren’t allowed on VT campus. Weren’t there signs posted??? I mean c’mon, don’t people read and obey signs anymore?
Since most people, especially college-aged kids, go through life with their head up their butts, not noticing anything going on around them, I don't find this fact particularly comforting.
>>>Tech asking people on campus to stay inside, secure doors. <<<
Is it just me, or would “Load your weapons and be alert.” be a more useful message?
The fact this report came from “three juveniles attending a camp” speaks volumes. Ditto for the amazing amount of detail they were able to provide. This has all the makings of a false alarm, and I certainly hope that proves to be the case.
Wonder if Tech is hosting a football or basketball camp this week for some of those blue-chippers they want to sign down the line? Every kid has a cell phone these days and with a little forethought and one call, they can shut down an entire campus. And, when the cops question them, they can always claims they “thought” they saw a gun.
Probably a hoax but we are locked down anyway.
could be a law, don’t remember one, but, hey, no reason why I should
No one actually SAW a gun, they claim there could have been one under a cloth? really?
It is just you.
Who carries an unloaded weapon (once out of the military)?
Lock down ended. False alarm.
You’re at VT?...................
Yep. This same thing happened at Roanoke Mall a few months back. Turned out to be an umbrella. People around here are jumpy.
I’ll tell you what they do. they are INCESSANTLY checking and reading their hand-held devices, non-stop. They don’t look up at anything, never make eye contact ...i don’t even know how kids get dates or hook up these days ...
