Matt Damon on debt limit: 'I'm so disgusted,' 'it's criminal' wealthy are not paying higher taxes

Academy award-winning actor Matt Damon said he is "so disgusted" with what's happening in Washington over the debt limit, claiming that the Tea Party is "willing to drive it all off a cliff" and adding that it's "criminal" the wealthy are not paying higher taxes.

"I'm so disgusted man. I mean, no, I don't know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. You know, so my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot," Damon said in an exclusive interview at the "Save Our Schools March" in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.

When asked if he agrees with President Obama's call for a "balanced approach" as part of a deal to raise the debt limit, Damon said, "Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they've paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime."

He continued, "It's criminal that like, you know, so little is asked of people who are getting so much, I mean, I don't mind paying more. I really don't mind paying more taxes. I'd rather pay for taxes than cut like 'Reading is Fundamental' or 'Head Start' or some of these programs that are really helping kids. I mean, why not? This is the greatest country in the world. Is it that much worse if you pay 6 percent more in taxes? Give me a break. You know, look at what you get for it. You get to be American."

Damon did not say the highest percentage he would be willing to pay in taxes but argued for tax reform.

"I mean, why not raise it per million bucks? Right? And then cap it somewhere," he said.

Damon also said those making over $250,000 per year are not job creators.

"Nobody went and started a business with their Bush tax cut. You know, I don't know who would believe something – that just defies common sense so no, that's – no. I was against those tax cuts. I thought they were ridiculous. So little is asked of the upper class anyway, you know. I mean, what percent of them or their kids are fighting in any of these wars?" he said.

Damon also called the Tea Party "completely intransigent" in terms of the debt ceiling debate.

"It's true. They are absolutely willing to drive it all off a cliff. They mean what they say, that's for sure," he said.

The GOP should pass a law requiring the IRS to put on every tax form a section for a voluntary tax increase.
Let’s see how may of these Liberal Hypocrites check the box?

In ALL seriousness, Republicans should be consistently pointing out the huge profits in the entertainment industry and demanding that all tax breaks be eliminated for “big hollywood.”

So why doesn’t he pay more taxes? It’s an option.

Matt Damon is only okay with OTHERS paying higher taxes, not himself.
So all he would need to have happen is a confiscatory tax rate destroy his bottom line and he’d scream bloody murder.

He’d probably see it as a right wing conspiracy.
Idiot actually thought ‘they’ would come after him for the lame Bourne film series.

Someone should ask how much “tax avoidance” he engages in and whether he donates to the Treasury.

Why not just raise Hollywood tax rate to 95%? How fast would they leave the town?

A lot of film shoots have already "left town" to avoid dealing with unions -- Vancouver is one of the big beneficiaries here.

Why doesn’t Matt bother to mention the huge tax breaks Hollywood gets?

wouldn’t we hobbits just love to see Matt Damon’s personal tax returns?

Just to see whether he is paying the “criminal” 35% top federal Bush rates? Plus California state, property and other taxes, of course

and to see if he is being paid to show up at charity fundraisers

These jackwagons from Barky on down, need to be nailed down on what they consider a “FAIR” share

Bill O’Reilly said that Damon and all his Hollywood Libs should mail in their money to help the One and his Mob out. Dumb Clucks like Matt Damon should stick to acting and not make Fools of themselves by talking stupid? I’ll bet if Obama proposed taxing only the Hollywood Mob of actors & Actresses at 70%, they’d all have a cat, so to speak, and march on the White House like Tea Party Terrorists? Sarcasm</>

Okay, Matt m'boy, if you were were a dumbass schlub (but wait, you are!) making $50K a year, would you have:

-A personal assistant?
-A housekeeper?
-An agent?
-An accountant?
-A nanny for your kids?

And these examples are just off the top of my head. I'm sure my fellow FReepers can think of many, many more examples that you, a person who makes FAR in excess of $250K per year, employs either directly or indirectly. But let's assume you are correct in your asinine statement that the Bush tax cuts didn't "create" a single business. How many businesses stayed around because they COULD afford to stay in business without a crushing tax burden? How many of those existing businesses hired more people because they could afford to do so?

Just because you wrote a screenplay about a guy who went to Harvard, doesn't mean you really are qualified to step foot on the campus, m'boy.

Somebody, like the IRS, should audit him. He’s a democrat after all. Write out your big check, sir, send it to the department that takes money and applies it directly to pay down the debt!
