The president is the most visible symbol of what voters see as a badly dysfunctional government. Some Democrats say he could have negotiated better.
Reporting from Washington Though he succeeded in staving off a historic default, President Obama emerges from the debt talks in a weakened political position with limited influence over a divided Congress.
The protracted debate over the federal debt ceiling came to an official end Tuesday as the Senate by a 74-26 vote approved the compromise bill hammered out over the weekend. Obama signed it hours later.
Administration officials concede the debate gave the public a look at government sausage-making at its worst. And White House officials also know that as president, Obama is the most visible symbol of a government that voters see as badly dysfunctional. The turmoil in Washington is not what voters signed up for when Obama was elected, officials say, acknowledging that as president, he absorbs a substantial share of voters' unhappiness.
Voters used words such as "disgusting'' and "ridiculous" in summarizing their view of the debt fight, according to one poll released this week. And that unhappiness comes as Obama faces fresh signs that the economic recovery is stalled.
Obama is hardly the only incumbent in trouble with voters. His approval ratings, which have dropped to the low 40s, still far exceed those of Congress. A Gallup poll last month showed that only 33% approved of congressional Democrats; 28% of Republicans. But congressional disapproval numbers are of limited comfort to a president eyeing a difficult reelection campaign.

Nancy kept working the race card angle with her, “Why now,why this particular president” , angle.
She is unaware of the struggle most American find themselves in.
Why do they always refer to it as a default? Default is when you stop serviceing your debt, not when you stop borrowing. They make it sound as if the bummer is a hero for stopping a “default”.
Wow, it really sounds like he needs a 100 million dollar vacation at taxpayer's expense.
Oh wait...
Though he succeeded in staving off a historic default>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Buahahahahahahaha! A default That Obama created and engineered by refusing to present a budget to Congress, he did one and it was voted down, so he went into a sulk and refused to change his approach......result...A CRISIS!LOL.
He staved off himself! This is political masturbation at its most ironic and hillarious. And the idiot is not fooling anyone.
We await the next crisis with baited breath. BRING IT!
I think a little golf is in order.
Can someone tell me why there was no crisis last year when the Dems refused to submit a budget? No drama, no news reports, no threats of default, no threats of lowered credit rating. Boenher and McConnell should have said "you guys handled it so well last year we have decided to follow you and do nothing again."
After that he will party hardy and then take a vacation.
There wasn’t going to be a default unless Obama would NOT fire many of his workers.. and take current revenue(incoming taxes) to pay them..
Well, to some extent, crises happen when the MSM stirs up an issue. The MSM stirred up this issue this year, hinting at financial Armageddon if this debt ceiling were not raised by August 2nd.
The Democrats refusal to submit a budget last year didn’t have any drama or deadlines, or opposing sides drawing lines in the sand as they took negotiating positions. There were no consequences, or thoughts of a financial Armageddon for not drawing up a budget.
And the MSM may have ignored the budget last year because it was their Democrat friends who decided to avoid doing a budget. They may have looked at the story differently if “evil” Republicans had decided to do without a budget.
Exactly! The whole thing was totally manufactured. It was an 0bama-MSM Drama Queen creation.
