One Cup of Coffee, G.I. Joe

KRISTEN WONG FOR HAWAII MARINE - Kailua-Kona resident Robert Gowan was a coffee farmer looking for a way to support the troops.

Gowan asked his father, a World War II Air Force veteran, if he had any good memories “amidst all the tough conditions” during the war. His father replied that he and his fellow service members would find cheer as they lay in a fighting hole in the early morning hours when they could smell fresh coffee brewing from the cooks’ tent.

Since 2008, Gowan, the Hawaii state coordinator of the Hawaii Chapter of the Gathering of Eagles, has sent more than 5,000 pounds of coffee as well as other supplies to every service branch currently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In each service, the project has a different name. For the Marines, it is Operation Jarhead Java.

Most coffee aficionados say Kona is THE BEST-TASTING coffee in the world.

Because of the rarity and costliness of 100% Kona coffee, some retailers sell “Kona Blends”. These are blends of Kona and Colombian, Brazilian or other foreign coffees. Usually they contain only the minimum required 10% Kona coffee and 90% cheaper imported beans.

Some retailers use terms like Kona Roast, or Kona-Style. To be considered authentic Kona coffee, the state of Hawaii’s labeling laws require the prominent display of the words “100% Kona Coffee”.

Current Hawaiian law requires blends to state the percentage of Kona coffee on the label. (There is no matching Federal law.)

The only thing better than pure Kona coffee is to enjoy it in Kauai watching the ocean from your lanai.

Just remembering makes me feel peaceful.

If that is where I think it is, I have been to that very beach. I spent a wonderful week reading a Michner novel on beaches all over Maui and Kauai (and in the hotel and on the plane and while brushing my teeth — remember, this is Michner!).

MMMmmmmmm is right, followed by a heartfelt *sigh* :)

True Michener legend----serving in the military he wrote down the name of
an interesting mountain he'd seen....Bali Hai---which became the
touchstone of the epic novel "Tales of the South Pacific".....
and the megahit play and movie---"South Pacific."

Robert has been a one man force in organizing, soliciting, sorting and mailing his donations of Kona Coffee. He has established personal relations with members of the military that reflect his admiration for them and their service to our country. The numerous letters and personal contacts from military personnel reflects how important it is to them that we recognize and appreciate their service and sacrifices. Robert’s devotion to our men and women in uniform far exceeds the value of the world’s most exclusive coffee sent with Aloha to our heroes in uniform.

What a beautiful song — dubbed or not.

You are still killing me here! Even if it summertime, to the tropics I shall go as soon as practical! :)

Kona is very good, but I prefer Blue Mountain if I have a choice. But you gotta love the Jarhead Java thing.
