Following her emotional return to the House of Representatives last night to vote in support of the debt deal, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced on The Early Show this morning that she will run for re-election in Arizona. The show promptly tweeted the news.

[Snip]

Explaining her vote last night, Giffords said in a statement "I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy."

What happened was tragic, but this woman should not be canonized. If she truly believed in having her constituents represented in Congress, she would have stepped aside while she recovered.
As it stands her district has not really had representation since her shooting. Now she parachutes in for her Party and then parachutes back out back to rehab. What it shows is her “service” is all about her and her ambitions. This is nothing to be celebrated.

At least its not the senate. 1 of 435 is a lot better than 1 of 100.

They brought her in for drama.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this whole process was deliberately delayed just to bring her in for this vote to rally the dem base....and try to perpetuate a sense of unity...."can't we all just get along?"

“Giffords said in a statement”.....With all due respect to the Congresswoman, I’d think she would do her voting base a favor by speaking in person.

Maybe she can ask her esteemed colleagues (Mr VP for one...) to tone down the rhetoric of calling the Republicans and Tea Party members TERRORISTS and ask her moron Dem pals to cool it when they describe our side as BOMBING the economy.

Just maybe?....could she?....

The “compromise” cuts nothing: $2.1T in cuts with $2.1T in spending increases is static. Likewise, the bill is LOADED with loopholes for tax increases.

The democrats lost nothing on this, and the opinion that they did is coming from ABCNBCCBSCNNMSNBC.

Her statement is typically liberal in its contrivance and drama.

"...she is more coherent and lucid than Sheila Jackson Lee and Maxine Waters."

LOL! Too true!

However, I think she should retire.

Given that her district, where I live, is extremely liberal I don’t think scripted events are at all out of the question. And, there will be a whispering campaign about her evil opponent at every turn, highlighting what a sacrifice Gabby has made and so on and so on. Remember, this is the place that turned a memorial service for the shooting victims into a raucous campaign event for Obama, complete with printed slogans on T-shirts. All Giffords needs to do is be able to raise her hand for the votes in the House, when she is told to by her handler. She is the perfect Democrat.

Such melodramatic verve has the imprint of Nancy Pelosi. Perhaps she is the ghostwriter?

I am not being mean but does this woman know what she voted for or against..

Did anyone?

I hate that Dems ran out the clock to the point the ink of the finale deal was less than a day old when it came up for a House vote. The GOP couldn't keep their 72 hrs promise or even their "3 calendar day" rule and still get the Senate to vote in time to beat the midnight Aug 2 deadline.

this was the most disgraceful display of politics that I’ve ever seen.

The fact that this woman has not cast a vote in 8 months or so is a crime against our representative republic - a special election should have been held months ago.

Instead the American people are treated to a dog an pony show where the Congress hides behind a brain damaged woman in order to put America $7 trillion more in debt. Clapping and patting themselves on the back after the vote on a crisis they themselves created. Taking yet another shot at the Tea Party by putting the woman shot by the Tea Party (in their opinion) on a pedestal.

I want to puke.

Ms. Giffords has not been in Congress or apart of the debate since February.
I question whether she even totally understood the importance of what is going on.
To trot this poor woman out as a trained dog to vote was a travesty.
The bigger travesty is that she is still in congress at all.
Her district has not been represented at all and Gov. Brewer should have invoked that law in Arizona that if a elected official is out over three months a special election is called for.
you can damn well bet is this was a Republican, Independent, etc., the Democrats would have been beating the drumbeat for a special election.
Ms. Giffords needs to resign and heal.

Who told this woman it was all up to HER? Someone must have.

I chanced to be watching CSPAN when she was paraded in, at the appointed time. Her alleged comment caught my ear, but then again, I heard a lot of really unbelievable self-worship from that place.

It's just in the water there, I guess. These people really think they are IT.

"(eyeroll)"

You can double that. Too bad they had to diminish an otherwise incredible moment with such a silly comment.
