WASHINGTON—Ushering in the largest decrease in auto fuel consumption since the 1970s, President Barack Obama and automobile manufacturers Friday announced a deal that will save drivers money at the pump and dramatically cut heat-trapping gases coming from tailpipes. The agreement pledges to double overall fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, bringing major under-the-hood changes for the nation's automobiles starting in model year 2017. Cars and trucks on the road today average 27 miles per gallon.
"This agreement on fuel standards represents the single most important step we have taken as a nation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil," Obama said, sharing the stage with top executives of the major auto makers before a backdrop of some of the most cutting-edge cars on the road.
"Just as cars will go further on a gallon of gas, our economy will go further on a barrel of oil," Obama said.
When achieved, the 54.5 mile-per-gallon target will reduce U.S. oil consumption from vehicles by 40 percent and halve the amount of greenhouse gas pollution coming out of exhausts.

So if this goes the way everything else Obozo has touched then the fuel consumption of cars will get worse instead of better.

f=ma remains as the law of physics. If the car survives, if the driver compartment survives, it means nothing if your brains and guts are turned to chum by the deceleration forces. Modern autos are designed with crumple zones for this reason- mitigate the forces before they reach the human. And to accomplish that goal, it takes area and distance, over which these forces are dissipated.

A dumbass, Chicago community organizer has figured out how to get 54.5 miles per gallon?! Outstanding! I wonder how much THIS is going to cost us. BTW: Isn’t this admitting that the community organizer doesn’t have much “hope” for GM’s Voltswagen and other “electric” cars?
I'll bet meeting this new standard will add more than $8,000 to the cost of a vehicle.
This will be removed as soon as obama is replaced.

And the “logic” is the increased cost of the cars will be offset by the fuel economy. So, why stop at 54.5, why not demand 100 mpg?
