Harry Reid’s defense cuts: A ‘disastrous impact’
Washington Post ^ | July26,2011 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 07/26/2011 6:25:31 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Right Turn has obtained a memo from House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) to Republican committee members analyzing the defense cuts in the Reid plan

Based on our analysis the [Reid] proposal would result in $868 Billion in defense cuts over 10 years when weighed against the FY11 budget request. Immediately the plan would cut defense in real terms below the FY11-enacted level of $553 billion and hold defense below the FY11-enacted level through FY13. It represents a $16 billion cut to our FY12 levels for next year and a $26 billion cut for the following year. Let me be clear, this is a real cut. It would have a disastrous impact on our military and we wouldn’t be able to carry out our missions. As I stated in the Gang of Six analysis, since the President originally submitted his budget proposal for FY2011, defense has already shrunk $439 billion over 10 years.

This number may sound familiar. It is the Gang of Six defense cut number, isn’t it? My, no wonder the president offered support for Reid (before he beat up, in primetime, plans that contained no tax hikes).

McKeon also points out the issue identified yesterday, namely the “$1 trillion in phony savings from winding down the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.” He explains: “This gimmick first assumes an extension of the troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan through the next ten years, and then assumes the surge level will wind down on time for budget savings. This is a gimmick and should be treated as such, everyone knows the wars are winding down. This does nothing to change the spending habits of Washington.”

Whatever the bobble in the Boehner plan due to different baseline numbers, the House speaker’s proposal does not savage defense in this

I wouldn’t think Jennifer Rubin would dare to show her head after falsely jumping the gun on the Norway attacks. Of course, she’s wrong on this. The Pentagon cuts are too few, not too many. We can’t afford to keep policing the world.

Ironic isn’t it. The Federal Government’s ONLY job is to protect us ... and that’s where we end up, spending money on everything else and cutting the protection. We’ve got this next election to get rid of this poison or it is all over.

Defense is a Constitutionally mandated responsibility of the federal government. Almost evrything else is dogshit. This is not about policing the world. The sixties are gone. This is about maintaining and projecting American power as a deterrent in a dangerous and unstable world. get it? good.

The Dept of Education budget has gone from $32B in 2009, $56B in 2010 to $71B in 2011 (estimates). It employes 5,000 and they educate noone.

eliminate that.

When the federal government spends a million dollars on studying the private parts of homosexuals, something is really wrong somewhere...

If the Dems really cut the military as much as they say they want, the unemployment rate will shoot up to 15% overnight.

at least the DoE spends its money in the US,
unlike the Pentagon,
which gives billions to the Taliban

I think deep cuts in Defense are pretty inevitable. I would reluctantly accept those -- but only if I see deep (read: total) cuts in lots of other areas.

If DOD is virtually the only place they want to cut, then it's not about the money -- it's just an agenda-driven desire to weaken the nation.

The federal government must be reduced by at least half (its a start).

And yes, I do think we need to reform entitlements too. All welfare programs need to be merged into a single bureacracy and fire the rest. No free phones, no free apartments, no paid utilities, no food stamps, just a monthly cash allotment for a limited period of time for those who are actually in desperate times. (this could surprise home inspections and checking out how nice their cars and stuff are)

Folks need to understand, those baseline budgets do not include war operations. Those costs are several 100's of billion per year ON TOP of the baseline.

Baseline is core operations, personnel, health, weapons procurement, R&D etc.

Yes, those cuts would be disastrous... unless we pulled troops from Germany, Japan, Korea etc. I'm not opposed to that, especially if those dirty scumbag dim Senators allow the Pentagon to close any base it wants to to ensure consolidation and efficiency.

These are the same politicians that mandate that the DoD be spent on all kinds of non-defense related crap too.

$600,000 for a gurgling frog fairy statue. It was supposedly canceled, I wonder what they replaced it with, a Caesar Chavez mural?

What utter tripe. Instead of blabbing about what would only further assist in the destruction of our military, don’t you have a Ron Paul rally to attend. By declaring yourself even to the left of Dingy Harry on this issue you look like a nutjob hippy.

Too bad it works as a magnet instead of a deterrent.
