Federal pay and benefits spared -- for now

The House and Senate debt proposals released Monday do not contain specific provisions targeting federal employees' pay or benefits, although such spending cuts likely will be part of future proposals, observers believe.

The plans, released by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., both endorse trillions in spending cuts that would affect agency budgets, including Defense Department spending, over the next decade. Neither proposal includes tax increases or specific cuts to entitlement programs like Medicare.

"I am pleased that neither of the two latest proposals addressing the debt ceiling and fiscal deficit calls for immediate federal retirement cuts," National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelley said in a statement.

There are never any cuts, just reductions in proposed increases.

Cuts would mean a percentage LESS tomorrow than what was spent today.

The federal workforce needs to be slashed.

I want a strong military but we need to discourage lifers and keep a steady drum beat of younger people in....that way, the pension and medical benefits won’t be so tremendous, as they are now...

Step 1: 10% cut, including pension, or you may feel free to quit.

Step 2: The taxpayers default on government employees, and your get NOTHING.

It is always Seniors, Vets, and Federal Workers who are targeted. Can you imagine a Senior Citizen who retired from the military and federal government. That poor guy will be screwed three times for giving of himself his entire life. Pitiful.

Sucking at three tits makes one an easy target.

You could fire ALL the federal employees and the absence of their former salaries in the national tally would not make a mark ~ they round off things before they get to such a small number.

Yeah, and it keeps you good and healthy and gives you a steady hand on the firing line.

Do you imagine actions don't have consequences?

Want to save billions and juice the economy? Nuke the EPA, EEOC, OSHA, Dept. Education. Fire every last parasite. Numerous other Federal agencies can be slashed to skeleton crews or fire all personnel

While reduction in force ultimately needs to happen, I fail to see how you can “juice” the economy by increasing the number of people without disposable income.

Did you realize that the annual grants made by Department of Education are equal to about 1/3 of the total annual payroll for all the federal employees of all kinds including the military and the postal service.

That's just the annual grants from ONE DEPARTMENT.

Interior has some problems along that line, but the Grand Daddy of them all is USDA ~

Just cut out grants and you have more savings than you could ever dream off, and that wouldn't touch any entitlements!

BTW, "entitlements" are things people thought they were paying for or are paying for now. Social Security, Medicare, retirement ~

In fact, if it weren't for Social Security collections the federal government would have gone flat a$$ broke busted on it's back BANKRUPT 30 years ago.

My federal retirement "contributions" gave you people an interest free loan for many, many years.

If you want to cut me off just give me my money back PLUS interest ~

Bunch of freeloaders ~ this country would have been on the sidewalk several months back but Geithner TOOK all the federal employee deposits he could to shore up continued government spending.
