What a first lady, a chain store and others are doing to try to make fresh fruits and vegetables more available in poor communities.
Nothings ever as simple as wed like it to be. A case in point: Policies that simply increase access to supermarkets may not get people to choose an apple over ice cream, a recent study reported.
Changing peoples eating habits is difficult, in other words. One reason is money. Healthful foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and dairy, can often be pricey. For the cost of a couple of peaches, a person can get a full meal on the dollar menu at a fast-food outlet. Another problem: The produce in stores in low income neighborhoods is often of low quality.
This is a hefty problem, given that 1 in every 3 children and adults is overweight or obese. Policy-makers and health-food advocates across the country are developing programs to increase access to healthful foodsand make it easier for people to buy them.
Here's a look at some of them:
-- Earlier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the California FreshWorks Fund, a $200-million partnership between the California Endowment and grocers, healthcare organizations and financial institutions. The project is meant to promote development of grocery stores, farmers markets, gardening programs and other solutions to increase access to high-quality, healthful foods in areas with limited availability (so-called food deserts). Retailers that offer a greater selection of healthful foods and sell less junk food will get easier access to the grants. Organizers said they hoped the program would create 6,000 jobs in California.

let’s add ‘revenues’ to that list. doublespeaking rats. They take us for fools.
Grocery store chains dont operate in ghetto areas because of the shoplifting problems. Pure and simple reason.

That’s one of the reasons, but not the only reason.
Modern supermarket are huge, and the volume they require to be profitable means that they have to draw from a wide geographic area, which in most places means from outside the ghetto.
People who live outside the hood just won’t go there, particularly in the evening hours, with money to shop.
My thoughts also.
Who wants to put up with mobs stealing fresh vega....wait a minute...the
only thing they wouldn’t steal, so they must want money to divert someplace else.
This article published in the Times last week quotes a legitimate study that directly disproves and contradicts every bit of the rational for Michelle Obamas food initiative

Somehow, I find this quite humorous and quite disturbing at the same time. You just can't make this stuff up. Nice to see that rigorous fact checking is alive and well at the Times Editorial Board.

It's really kind of hysterical, but then I am easily amused :-)
Part of the problem is that Eric the Bigot, Moos and Zeros “people” can not cook, of course, with the exception of meth, crack, etc.
That’s only partly true about the rice. You’ll need liquid and heat to make it edible. Those things will cost you as well (unless you live near a source of potable water).
Further proof that personal traits do rub off on one’s partner....now we have two occupants in the White House , one of which is solely responsible for running this country, stuck on stupid. =.=
They flush their toilets with drinking water, and power their home entertainment systems with half a kilowatt.
Cooking rice is only a problem of choices.
My Brother owned a small grocery store in N.J.and I saw it up close.
Not a racist bone in my body but he was ROBBED BLIND and had to give it up. Crime and gang graffiti, Cops didn't give a s#it.
Democrats ran the area and ran us right out of town!
The joint is now EMPTY!
The biggest problem in the “food deserts” are the people that live there. Where ignorance is proud of its ignorance and thieves are proud of their thievery not many stores are going to be available.
I feel for the decent people who feel that they have to live in these hellholes.
They allowed one to open up on the West side a couple of years ago in the Austin neighborhood one of the worst areas in the city.
When they announced one was going to be hiring thousands of people showed up to apply. When it opened there was overwhelming response.
The Unions failed to stop it after fighting Walmart for decades. More will follow.

What is pricey? The life long food stamp recipients Moochelle is trying to look out for dont care about the price as long as the store has enough ribs and steaks. They have never earned an honest dime anyway. It sounds like they have a lot in common with Barack Hussein who never held a real job either. But never fear even if the debt ceiling isnt raised Barack will make sure the welfare and food stamp checks get out to his voters.
I can believe that.
I knew a welfare mom..5 kids...actually a widow... all kids same dad.
She said that seeing as a bag of chips cost the same as a bag of popatoes, why should she spend all that time peeling and cooking potatoes?
I doubt that she’d been interested in peeling carrots either.
I went into a Giant Food Store in the ghetto on day and this woman was standing at the produce counter stripping the stem off of the Kale and leaving the stems in the floor while putting the leaves in a bag.
I asked the produce manager why he didnt say something and he said it wouldn’t do any good and would just start an argument. Another reason stores do not go into these neighborhoods.
Positive effect? Like Bill Cosby?
But, no, she chooses to go with the demagoguery.
I’m thinking in terms of emergency preparedness. It’s not enough to have a bag of rice. One also needs some clean water, a source of reliable heat, and a container in which to cook the rice. Not picking a fight; just encouraging FReepers to think beyond the bag and to the preparation.
I betcha the potato chip isle and the the soda pop isle will be sold out before the “healthy foods” are even touched.
