The second most powerful Democrat in the Senate warned Republicans Sunday that they are toying with a fragile economy and would take the blame for any fallout from a debt default.
On Sunday, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he had six words of warning for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio): If you break it, you own it.
Republicans and the White House have argued the case that the president owns the economy, along with its recovery.
Durbin slammed Boehner for calling off debt-ceiling negotiations with the White House on Friday.
The president negotiated with you in good faith, Durbin said he would tell Boehner. You walked away from it. Twice.
Boehner said he called off negotiations with the president on Friday because the president pushed for increased revenues beyond the level to which Republicans could agree. President Obama said Boehner walked away from a good deal for both sides.
Republicans have said they expect failed deficit negotiations to reflect badly on President Obamas leadership.
[Republicans] want to make this a campaign issue, Durbin said, pushing back against Boehner and other Republicans including Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) who have criticized the president for wanting even a temporary raise of the debt ceiling to last through the next election.
The White House has said that extending the debt ceiling at least in until 2013 will remove politics from the equation. Boehner said Sunday that the president is worried about his next election rather than thinking about the country.
Durbin argued that a short-term extension of the debt ceiling that only lasted a few months would be bad for the country.
This notion that we're going to replay this movie in four to five months, that we're going to face this whole thing all over again? The American economy is too fragile, Durbin said on CBS Face the Nation. It's going to hurt us. It's going to stall our economy.
Senate Democratic leadership has been working nonstop to reach a deal, according to Durbin. It needs to happen today, he said, indicating Democrats are working under a deadline similar to that of the Republicans. Boehners office said Republicans intend to release a plan by before the Asian markets open Sunday afternoon.
Who can concoct the most elqouent 6 word response to Dickie-doo?
But “we” didn’t break it .. “the party of Durban did” ... so they own it no matter what happens.
Too late. Debbie Blabbermouth Schultz has already said that the Dems. own the economy.
Sorry, Dick, this one is on you and us for electing the likes of you, Sh!tbag.
The problem here is the ‘rat leftists are using their media sycophants to lay blame to the republicans, while ‘rats destroy society.
I hear that, as an IL resident I do my best to vote ole flaccid Dick out ever 6 years, but...
Idiot can’t even count; that’s seven words.
A little more than six words, but...
He’s been claiming for 4 1/2 years that he didn’t own it, so what does he have to give?
Is he admitting he owns it now?
Looks like Durbin protests too much.
And he owns it lock, stock and TARP.
“The president negotiated in good faith”.
Bwahahahaha. Yeah, by refusing to put together a plan? And a budget? Effing joker.
They’ve got people convinced that they aren’t going to get their check.
A local radio station was talking to the head of the local SSA office about other things, and they brought up the fact that they were getting flooded with calls from people worried about not getting their check.
The president negotiated with you in good faith, Durbin said he would tell Boehner.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Thats a lie. Obama had a deal with Boehner, and then Obama moved the goal posts by arbitrarily insisting on another 440 billion dollars in tax revenue as a deal was about to be made. Result: Obama looses, and the Dems own any political debacle, which is mostly a false crisis.
That is not negotiating in good faith, Obama knew that Boehner could not get the votes for raising taxes in the House.
Thats hardly negotiating in good faith.
Is that a promise? Anything to get rid of the commie idiots.
If we owned it you’d tax it
This from the very same Dick who repeatedly told us that there was absolutely NOTHING wrong at Freddie and Fannie!
Dick Turban LIES!
Wrong Turdbin,You already broke it!
um dick, WHO broke it?
and then there that pesky nagging problem about dems and being able to count correctly.....57 states....biden 3 letter word (jobs).....
If the quote is accurate, “if you break it, you own it”, that would be 7 words dick.
