Pentagon and its supporters brace for deeper cuts

The Pentagon and its supporters are bracing for the likelihood of much deeper reductions in the U.S. military's budget, as budget negotiators now eye defense cuts of $800 billion or more over the next decade.

With talks intensifying ahead of an August 2 deadline to raise the debt limit, lawmakers hoping to shape an overall budget deal have advanced proposals that would cut defense spending by more than double the $400 billion President Barack Obama proposed just three months ago.

Some proposals call for as much as $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade.

Against that backdrop, Obama's nominee for Army chief of staff, General Raymond Odierno, cautioned lawmakers on Thursday against slashing defense spending too deeply.

Odierno told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee that the United States has a history of shrinking its military too quickly after conflicts, only to have to rebuild later.

I noticed that a not so subtle PR effort in the state controlled American media (SCAM) to form public opinion against "Pentagon waste" has begun.

On CNN radio "news" there was an item that the Pentagon has undertaken expensive projects only to abandon them later.

No detail of specific projects -- just something disguised as "news" to make the public "aware." If Obama is paying for the PR all the better for CNN, the most busted news source.

I personally know of such abandoned projects -- but come on! There's waste but more often how do you know something until you investigate?

We all know of the far more numerous successful research and development projects! If that were not true we would not even be here.

The left wing haters of our military are the benefactors of waste and abuse in other government agencies -- for example Fannie Mae. How many Marxist-Alinsky Rules For Spoiled Brats Washington insiders has Fannie Mae made millionaires?

Republican Senator Tom Coburn unveiled a deficit reduction plan earlier this week that included $1 trillion in defense cuts, much of it through changes to the military's healthcare system, reducing the nuclear weapons force structure and canceling or delaying arms programs.

Another package of proposed cuts, by the so-called Gang of Six senators, came under fire from the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Buck McKeon. The California Republican warned that it included $886 billion in national security cuts and said he opposed it.

I don't know what's gotten into Coburn....

After the way the military embraced the repeal of DADT I am cool to the idea of sending them on their way in lacy (but inexpensive) shorts and water pistols.Cut away Komrade Secretary Paneta.

I think the House is working on a repeal of Dodd-Frank.

Politicians first serve federal employees with federal revenues to local government constituents and the retail/services that they spend money on: teachers, firepersons, police, planning office folks, real estate, building offices, environmental, commissioners, other politicians, social workers, developers, pensioners, civil engineers, administrators, etc.

We’ve gone so far with big government, that all depends on big government. They’ll cut defense, until repudiation of debt is the only choice left.

There is enough, BILLIONS and BILLIONS,
for Hamas, Hezbollah, Ikhwan, al Qaeda,
even the enemies’ mosques in the USA
and in every other of Obama’s 57 states,
but NOT for the Pentagon?

Forget it.

Either there is CW2, impeachment,
or the US is finished.

Bull crap, are you trying to tell me the military has not spend billions on junk it never used. If you are, I want to sell you a couple of tankers, never sailed good as new, or how about a 280 Million per copy of a do all jet plane that is an over priced POS, and there is the job Lewinsky had, I sure there are thousands more just like her. And they could save a fortune if they just started using their damn computers another two years, instead of getting all new ones every other year.

RE: Bull crap, are you trying to tell me the military has not spend billions on junk it never used.

No.

As I said (tried to say), I have personal experience. I saw it in one case and I saw success many times.

Both DoD's failures and the many successes were expensive but! I still got my freedom.. er pretty much. But it is not a foreign enemy that is subtracting from my rights.

But does it mean because there have been DoD waste among the successes that we need to eliminate DoD?

Should we just smile at the waste, fraud, and abuse at all the other agencies -- or at least ignore it?

Those questions are not for you. They are rhetorical.

I remember when the army moved north of Baghdad and captured an armory full of nice new AK’s some little shave tailed captain had them thrown out in the street and call the news media over to film him running over them with a tank. The stupid bastard should have spent the rest of his life in jail. Because you and I got to go out and buy new ones for the new army. YES there is waste that needs to be trimmed and that little captain needs to have his ass fired, if it hasn't been.

Kill the Obamamination priorty #1.

But we could also cut down on the military if need be.

At this point, I’m starting to think that might be something we need to do. If we are going to wrestle the Federal Government down to size. The Federal Military is going to be a major problem and threat. The truth is we don’t need many of em, and the ones we do need most all of it can be transferred to the National guards of the 50 States.

The Federal army can be reduced to a tiny fraction of its present size consisting primarily of just the top officers and most elite special forces personnel. People who will have 2 primary responsibility related to the defense of theses united States.

1: Maintain the capability to pull together the resources of the various State militia into a large coherent large army & air-force.

2: Respond to small time military/political crisis around the world involving less then say ~2 thousand troops.

Anything more and a congress should declare war and the Militia(National Guard) should be mobilized to quickly surge the army & air-forces numbers to the required size.

Indeed the only reason we are retaining the Generals and other top staff is to maintain our strategic skills(for fighting a major war) and the capability to pull together the States in fighting a war.

The Special forces and instance response teams will be necessary for dealing with them little problems and providing an experience platform in which to train future generals. Beyond that there should be war games among the States administrated by the pentagon generals with the propose of encouraging competitive war fighting skill retention and development.

Most of the Military have to go outside the system for health care for themselves and their families now at smaller bases. And Champus pays pennies on the $1, just as Tricare for the retired over 65 Military does.

When you get down to half pennies on the $1 then unless you conscript doctors you won’t have one that will take a Champus or Tricare/Medicare patient.

and Express Script is buying another company, to set themselves up as a single provider of Military RX, by doing contracts so low no chain will take it as it is a total money looser. They are also a Witch to deal with.

NCOs are the backbone of any army. So of course Obama wants to cut the heck out of them.
As for those country club commandos, they are willing pawns of this regime. hardly any of them have the guts to tell them American people what is really going on because they are secure in their pensions and perks. They dont want to risk losing any of their toys.

Spot on, I know that the mid ranks are the glue that holds the Military together. Time for those with 25 yrs or more to retire, they have more than made their retirement goals, and can have another career...but then that would require them to actually have to WORK. A nasty 4 letter word for them.
