Electric cars about to cost more in California
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 21, 2011 | By Jerry Hirsch

It's going to cost more to buy electric cars in California.

The state has run out of the $5,000 rebates it was giving people who purchased all-electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf.

"The government is saying that if you are an early adopter, be prepared to pay for it," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst at auto information website TrueCar. He said there's enough demand for electric vehicles to absorb some price increases and shrinking rebates, at least for the next year or so.

Nissan has sold 4,134 of the battery-powered electric cars this year. General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet, by comparison, has sold 2,745 of its Volt car, which is technically a plug-in hybrid because it runs on electricity for about 40 miles before a gasoline-fueled generator kicks in to extend the vehicle's range. Chevrolet also is ramping up Volt production.

If I wanted an electric car for the “cool” factor and had the dough, I’d spring for a Leaf.

At 480 volts it “only takes 30 minutes to charge”. Wow, so many houses have 480 volt lines. I guess you have to drive 60 miles to one of those stations, wait 30 minutes, then use up all that power getting back home. Brilliant!

How much more nasty coal has to be burned to power these lemons? When are they going to build more inappropriate nuclear power plants? I guess it will be left to the inadequate biomass, wind and solar outfits to keep these puppies running.

I don’t know what that is, but I want one. Seriously, I love eccentric autos.

Looks like it’s made from a VW microbus.

So at 240 volts (which most houses have) it would take double that time?

Prolly more. Power = Voltage x Current but the batteries are probably 24 volts like a humvee. There's an optimum power level to charge a battery meaning that you can only use a particular voltage level (maybe a bit higher than 24 vdc) and the battery will only suck down so much current depnding on the design.

This technology works great with a bicycle. I bought my wife an ebike for WAY too much money but it does work well at 230 volts charging power (Europe)and it is what she wanted. As for getting stuck on the freeway in a snowstorm or on a hill it is bad news, obviously!

Yeah....and switch off your AC/Electric stove/dryer if you want to avoid melting your electric wires.

and watch out for local youts that:

a....unplug your charging connection

b...Jam a couple of twisted nails into the socket after a above.

Having bought a new economy car in 2010, I was blown over when I got my new registration notice, from California, there is a $20.00 smog abatement fee yearly, to punish me for buying a fuel efficient car I guess. as it replaces the cost of a smog check, that used to not be necessary for 4 years, so that elimates that savings..will the battery operated cars be punished that much? also the license fee was $98.00 this is lieu of property tax that was charged on personal property till 1937 it applies to all cars 11 years and younger..my car was no where near 45 k or so that the battery cars cost, so I would imagine their license fee will be around 300.00 seems no one figures in this cost when buying a battery car in California, that on top of the registration fees, county district fees, it will cost a battery operated car owner about $500.00 to get a new registration for their “green car”

“None of this affects the $7,500 federal tax credit used to spur sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, such as the Chevrolet Volt”.

Hey, there is something to take out of the national budget, probably save us a Billion or so!
If they cannot compete head to head, scrap them.

And just exactly WHERE do the feds get the authority for this redistribution of wealth?
Seriously, I cannot think of any justification, “Good Intentions” are insufficient!

A few thousand more for an electric car seems fair. Saving the planet doesn’t come cheap, you know.

I am fairly confident an electric “kit” car will be available online.

Probably on Amazon and it won’t be available for sale in CA.
