First lady takes on food deserts
Posted by: CNN White House Producer Alexander Mooney
Michelle Obama unveiled the latest push in her healthy-eating campaign Wednesday, announcing several national and regional food retailers have pledged to expand into a string of low-income markets where finding nutritious food options is nearly impossible.
If a parent wants to pack a piece of fruit in a childs lunch, if a parent wants to add some lettuce to a salad at dinner, they shouldnt have to take three city busses to go to another community to make that possible, the first lady said at during a White House event marking the new effort.
National chains participating in the partnership include Wal-Mart, Walgreens and SuperValu, which have agreed to open or expand more than 1,000 locations as part of the effort to eliminate what the Department of Agriculture calls food deserts throughout the country.
A handful of regional retailers are also involved, including Calhoun foods, an Alabama-based chain that currently serves low-income communities with six stores. The minority-owned company, which in the depths of the recession two years ago was forced to cut back workers hours to avoid layoffs, said they plan to open 10 additional stores in the coming years in currently under-served communities. CEO Greg Calhoun as well as Jimmie Coleman, a manger at the chain, were on hand for the event.
The White House says the collective effort will result in serving nearly 10 million Americans who currently have little affordable food alternatives to convenience stores and fast food chains.

Oh Boy! So many targets here.
Michelle If your people would just stop their shop lifting and burning of stores during their "We've been dissed Riots" and stop their "Flash Mob Terrorist Tactics" of looting stores and attacking people, then maybe someone will think about establishing a nice Grocery Store in the Hood! Their situation is their own and your fault!
Well, ordinarily I’d agree. Only the context of the word “progeny” implies an intact family - something entirely missing in these areas. They’re too busy double counting dependents for “head-of-household” EITC dependents. It is massive, massive fraud on the taxpayers of this country. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts many of these children have at least two valid social security numbers submitted by different guardians. Why not SS ignores every duplicate illegal Mexie SSN....
I’ve been to some of the very few inner city grocery stores. They offer meagerly stocked, overpriced, HORRIBLE vegetables and “healthy” foods. And I was scared to get out of my car to even enter the place. Now you couldn’t pay me to go to one. These government subsidized stores will be stripped clean by shoplifting, robbed regularly, and store owners will get killed (literally).
I stop by near work in the daytime when I’m carrying. Bums, drunks, drug dealers and no-goods, ‘begging-threatening’ and the odd crack whore or two thrown in for good measure.....tip.....avoid the quickstops that have a coin laundry next to them at all costs.
“a sandwich, a piece of fruit like an apple, and maybe a cookie “
I can’t even look at an apple! My Mom was convinced of the “apple a day” saying, and put one in my lunch every day for nine years! I only escaped the dreaded apples by going to boarding school! I avert my eyes in the grocery store! I started out liking them, but I’ve loathed them for over 50 years!
Mooseshell preaching nutrition? That’s like Bill Clinton lecturing on marital fidelity.
She’s so fat, when she goes to a buffet they have to put speed bumps on the floor so children aren’t trampled.
My community of Holder’s people drove two supermakets out of business with shoplifting,
now they have to take one city bus to buy lettuce.
But believe me, none of them pack a child’s lunch. Thass all free. Breakfast too.
Food desert?? I’d say given the size of her butt, she found the oasis in the desert.
I did not know you could just cook them in a skillet!!! What is your recipe? Can I make jelly filled (with a nice sugar coating)?
That fat-assed wookie needs to keepher nose out of our business.
There are “urban” food deserts because the grocers simply cannot afford to stay in business because of the rampant shoplifting and employee theft. And pervasive armed robberies..
That does not include the crime that happens on the parking lot...
Just remember when the checks stop coming from the gov, you don’t want to be anywhere a grocery store. It will be a madhouse that WILL turn murderous.
You need to have your own food prepped...
I always wondered why inner city stores always have low-lifes hanging around them. It’s because they know that customers have some jingle-jangle in their pockets that they can scrounge for.
my favorite food deserts are tiramisu and chocolate cheesecake.
What? Oh...deserts. Sorry.
While security concerns play a part, another factor is the fierce resistance from unions and “community organizers” whenever a Walmart or other large grocer tries to open up in a “food desert”.
Also, I’d like to see a map of the nation with the locations of these alleged “food deserts” marked. I’d bet that 98% of the population can find a head of lettuce within a 30 minute car/bus/subway ride of their home, and most of those who can’t live in rural areas, not cities.
Tru Dat....it’s intimidation...I buy gas in one of these places sometimes. Before I pull in. I pull out the 45 and rack it and set it on the driver’s seat with the door open while I gas up.... one way in, feet first out (for them)...
I know what you mean. I can't look at a Big Mac ever since I tried to eat five of them in one sitting.
Food deserts are the new global warming-just another scam!
