WASHINGTON (AP) -- Time running short to raise the government's borrowing limit, President Barack Obama on Tuesday hailed a plan by a bipartisan senators' group on deficit reduction as the kind of "balanced approach" the nation is looking for. He said it's time for Congress as a whole to rally around such a proposal.
"We don't have any more time to engage in symbolic gestures, we don't have any more time to posture. It's time to get down to the business of actually solving this problem," the president said.
Obama spoke even as House Republicans pushed toward a vote on legislation that would require trillions in spending cuts and a balanced-budget constitutional amendment in exchange for an increase in the debt ceiling. That plan is unlikely to get through the Senate, and Obama has said he would veto it.
Facing an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt limit, Obama said he would call House Speaker John Boehner after the vote to invited him and other leaders back to the White House for meetings in coming days.

>>> What the he!! good is higher taxes going to do if nobody is working and the market is tanked?
That, my friend, is going to need another committee or two to study for another year. And it’s gonna cost’ya.
And their findings will be promptly ignored by teh WON (or whoever).
What, exactly, is the democrat base sacrificing? I can't seem to find anything.
Why aren't the dependent democrat voters (the reason we're in this mess in the first place) being asked to sacrifice something along with everyone else? How about putting them to work so they can pay their own bills?
Share the WORK and the wealth will share itself. Free the tax slaves!
u r not wrong. The RINO’s caved.
The Senate is a cesspool, Senate GOP is going to hand the democrats more money in increased taxes. Like they have done a good job with our money over the last 100 years? Well go ahead Senate kick the can down the road, sell our children and grand children into more debt then can ever be repaid, just as long as yall can get along and get reelected huh?
I guess I can kiss TRICARE goodbye...
This seems like more than 3 income brackets to me and I imagine the middle class will pay the 22% and I mean people who earn around 60K which seems to me to be around the same as with Clinton. Also they are still keeping the Earned Income credit and they will be lowering deductions for mortgage interest and 401ks.
Sounds like this is in the governments favor
In 10 years you can take out your miniscule percentage in budget cuts...but we get to keep current increases by raising the debt ceiling limit and instituting tax hikes now! But at least it will give you the opportunity to tell the uninformed voters back home, "See, I voted for budget cuts!"
Plenty of earmarks for the “6” I’m sure.
Which is why so many people have gone Independent. Republicans promise, every time, to reign in spending and reduce the size of government, and then do the opposite. Actually, the democrats say the same thing to get elected.
Everyone lies, so deciding who to vote for is like a crap shoot.
The House will also have to pass this right? It’s not over yet.
10 year plan, cuts very little.
The RINOs in the Senate keep getting re-elected every election cycle.
And that’s why this plan is being pushed through.
Well, according to our Constitution...but with this gang who knows?
New name for TRICARE:
TRY-AND GET-CARE...................
SuhPrise suhprise!!
It's like a pea and shells game.. except there is no pea.
Meanwhile .. When will the lamebrain media pull the trigger on DoJ and its complicity in a 'Fast&Furious' developing scandal?
“Tom Coburn is the devil in this deal.”
Could be right. He apparently has a very cozy personal friendship with Obama, see below (barf alert)
