DeMint: Debt-ceiling debate will show if Tea Party is still 'a force'

The debate over increasing the debt ceiling will show whether the Tea Party still has influence, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.) said Monday.

"We're going to find out if the Tea Party's still there in force in the next few weeks on this debt limit because we're trying to recruit Americans right now and there is a website — cutcapbalancepledge.com," DeMint, a favorite of Tea Party supporters, said while speaking on York, Pa., radio station WSBA.

"We're encouraging Americans to sign up, call their congressmen and senators and help us create some pressure in Washington and let those people know who are standing firm that Americans are with them. So we'll know in the next few weeks if the Tea Party is still there, if they're still active."

DeMint has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the backup plan for increasing the debt-ceiling unveiled by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

On Friday, DeMint pledged to "use every tool" in the Senate to stop McConnell's plan, which authorizes President Obama to raise the debt ceiling in three separate increments. The only way Congress could stop Obama would be with resolutions of disapproval that the president could veto if they failed to meet a two-thirds majority threshold in both chambers of Congress.

“It basically says you can raise the debt limit, but we don’t have to vote for it,” DeMint said on the Scott Hennen radio show on Sunday. “It’s like leaving the jail door open and looking the other way, then saying it’s not our fault.”

A nuke set off (in some city) by some domestic group could change the whole political landscape..

“Cut, cap and balance” is actually “tinker, obfuscate, borrow and spend.”

Doesn’t anybody notice that the so-called “Tea Party Plan” raises the debt ceiling?

I know Tea Partiers in every state, and not one of them supports raising the debt ceiling.

This is an obvious scam. Wake up, people.

Once again I'll say it:

Every single vote to contract debt that our generation cannot possibly pay is a vote for the enslavement of our grandchildren. It is the stripping of our posterity’s God-given right to self-government by consent. A yes vote to raise the debt ceiling is an unmistakable signal to already-overburdened Americans that all the campaign rhetoric about fiscal restraint was merely empty talk.

This is a set up of the Tea Partiers for defeat.

On behalf of a plan Tea Partiers don’t even support.

It’s sickening.

The “choice” the American people are being given is between a baseball bat to the knee, or a crowbar to the elbow. Either way the result is the same: the victim lying on the ground with broken bones and bleeeding.

So DeMint asking for the Tea Party movement to get off it's butt and pressure Congress is somehow ignorance, it's somehow an admission of sucking up to Democrats?

You're just nuts.

This is a critical moment between elections and if the Tea Party movement can't get worked up about it and take action, the movement is just a fraud, done, dusted and tossed on the ash heap of history.

"Take action" in support of a "plan" that raises the debt limit, when we don't support raising the debt limit?

Explain to me why this isn't insanity of the highest order.

“The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place, we are entering a period of consequences.”

“Maybe we don’t have a free country anymore....”

No...... it’s just that when the chips are down, someone will need to be assigned to you to make sure you’re facing/firing at the enemy, and not at your own fellows. Keeping you orientated to the front divides our force and gives comfort and aid to the forces of evil formerly known as the loyal opposition (sic) Democrats.

I don't know who you think you are delivering your obama-style lectures, but my credentials as a conservative have been proven thousands of times on this board since 1998, not to mention over 1000 political, anti-obama, anti-democrat grapics and cartoons.

However, I am not a blind willy or a robot of the GOP either, there are too many of them who are RINO's and democrats in GOP clothing.

I've made it for 65 years without some smartass trying to "assign" anyone to me, and I'll be just fine here on out.

Why dies the Tea Party have to prove it is a force on every debate and every piece of legislation?

senator DeMint and conservative Republicans were sent to Washington last November to reduce the debt, deficit and spending. Nothing has changed so just do it. You conservative people in Washington have been given a mandate. We are not full time legislators!
