DeMint: Debt-ceiling debate will show if Tea Party is still 'a force'

The debate over increasing the debt ceiling will show whether the Tea Party still has influence, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.) said Monday.

"We're going to find out if the Tea Party's still there in force in the next few weeks on this debt limit because we're trying to recruit Americans right now and there is a website — cutcapbalancepledge.com," DeMint, a favorite of Tea Party supporters, said while speaking on York, Pa., radio station WSBA.

"We're encouraging Americans to sign up, call their congressmen and senators and help us create some pressure in Washington and let those people know who are standing firm that Americans are with them. So we'll know in the next few weeks if the Tea Party is still there, if they're still active."

DeMint has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the backup plan for increasing the debt-ceiling unveiled by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

On Friday, DeMint pledged to "use every tool" in the Senate to stop McConnell's plan, which authorizes President Obama to raise the debt ceiling in three separate increments. The only way Congress could stop Obama would be with resolutions of disapproval that the president could veto if they failed to meet a two-thirds majority threshold in both chambers of Congress.

“It basically says you can raise the debt limit, but we don’t have to vote for it,” DeMint said on the Scott Hennen radio show on Sunday. “It’s like leaving the jail door open and looking the other way, then saying it’s not our fault.”

It appears the Tea Party fad is starting to wind down. Amerikuns are going back to being Amerikuns again. (15 minute sound bites and fame is about all the attention span we can expect.)

“And because Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made it clear from the start that he intended to have his caucus use the filibuster on every piece of legislation, and vote as a bloc, forcing Democrats to always need 60 votes to pass anything, those numbers really matter.”

Boehner and Cantor Return to White House for Private Meeting

The two top House Republicans met privately at the White House Sunday with President Obama as the House prepared to vote on a deficit-cutting measure strongly opposed by the White House.

And it does appear the “big deal” is back on the table. Capitol Hill sources tell ABC News that Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner are again talking about reducing the deficit by more than $4 trillion over the next decade or so. Boehner reportedly wants the president to lay out specific cuts to entitlement programs. But many Republicans doubt such a plan can get through Congress.

Go Senator DeMint! Just wish you weren't a Romney supporter.

"We're going to find out if the Tea Party's still there in force in the next few weeks on this debt limit..."

We may be a force in elections, but as far as stopping bad legislation with this crowd of leftist hacks, forget about it. Just look at the force rallied to stop Obummercare and how it was jammed down our throats anyway.

Show us your cuts, Obama. Until then, the House is going to do its own thing.

Obama has no cuts. He hasn’t offered ten cents in cuts, other than press leaks, hot air, and trial balloons. He is a liar and has no intention of cutting any federal spending.

Nov-2012 will determine if Tea Party remains a viable force.

My belief is it WILL be a force on election day.

I don’t think he will consider a repeat endorsement 2011, although naturally DeMint still thinks Mittens is a “good candidate.”

Another RINO who still doesn't get the TEA Party MOVEMENT. Like the ignorance that permeates the democrats, DeMint thinks the TEA party is an organization, another political party.

Demint...it's only Americans who are sick of the likes of you, McConnell and other GOP sell-outs who think they must suck up to democrats.

Unlike you narccisstic congressmen, the TEA party doesn't have to be in front of a TV camera 24&7 to make their point...the TEA party will make their point in the voting booth.

Demint, you and your ilk will feel the "force" of the TEA party movement next November...don't get too cocky, it may be your undoing.

I know that.

What? I can't criticize him because he's a republican who still doesn't get the TEA party movement?

Maybe we don't have a free country anymore....

The TpCaucus has been growing and growing and Growing since Nov. 2010..
Nov. 2010 was the rehearsal... Nov. 2012 will be the main event..

Most people have long since made up their mind about Obama..
Polls are pure propaganda.. weighted and subtly directed.
Rinos have been targeted for primary and many democrats have targets on their backs as well..

The old guard of both parties are shaking in their boots..
The internet has trumped regular party politics..
Nov. 2012 could be a new day a breath of sunshine.. a clearing of slate..

Only problem is the “Dear Leader” may have “President for Life” planned with the FBI, CIA, NSA, secret Service, Justice Department, TsA, the Unions, the main stream media and academia toting water for him..

Hitler showed exactly how to do it too.. as well as Mussolini.. and Stalin..
Whatever happened to Cloward-Piven?.. is there an “end game”?..
What was Saul Alinsky’s end game?..

Jim DeMint certainly DOES “get” the Tea Party movement ... one of the few in the Senate that does!

Go after McConnell, fine; Boehner, fine; McLame, fine; Graham, fine -— but DeMint is probably the last senator I would accuse of being a RINO.
