Obama: 80% of Americans want higher taxes (You Lie!)
The Hill ^

Posted on 07/15/2011 10:23:00 AM PDT by quesney

President Obama on Friday kept up the pressure on Republicans to agree to revenue increases in a deal to raise the debt ceiling, claiming 80 percent of the public supports Democrats' demand for tax increases.

"The American people are sold," Obama said. "The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically."

Throughout the press conference, Obama blasted Republicans for ignoring what he said is the will of the American people by rejecting tax increases that would balance out spending cuts in a debt package.

"This is not an issue of salesmanship to the American people," Obama said. "I hope [Republicans are] not just listening to lobbyists and special interests ... I hope they're listening to the American people as well," Obama said, citing "poll after poll" showing Republican voters, as well as Democrats, believe in taking "a balanced approach" — including both increased revenues and spending cuts in a plan to cut the deficit.

Obama repeated his warning that the country is "running out of time" to avert a financial “Armageddon.”

"We should not even be this close on a deadline," Obama said. "This is something we should have accomplished earlier."

“No. The problem is that G.W.B. ruined the US in his 8 years. period”

You are either a fool or forgot your sarc tag. Unless by “ruined” you mean sub 5% unemployment and 20 consecutive quaters of GDP growth.

I was wondering when someone would post the merits/ a positive perspective on this.

But doesnt Obama get to raise the debt ceiling unless a vote in congress blocks it which they cant do without the Senate? And what about the spending cuts? All he has to do is propose some cuts since he cant actually cut spending?

So lets say he raises the limit but cheats on the proposed cuts as he does on other things? Who get’s the fallout? Or he proposes cuts in things he knows congress wont cut? Who gets the blame for the deficit? How about those tea party folks?

Just my job to play devil's advocate

He had plenty of help from Dodd and Frank ala Fanny and Freddie.

Yes, Bush had help. But the big mistake that he and his Statist dad made was NOT using the veto pen.

Americans are confused because Bush "happily" went along with insane spending, plus the cancerous Medicare Part-D fiasco. With regard to spending, there was no clear delineation between the two parties.

Hopefully, when a Conservative wins in 2012, they will slash and burn the insane budget, along with the Federal parasite payroll. Every Federal employee hired in support of Obamacare should be fired and their pensions revoked.

Then the American people will clearly see the difference between the RINOs/evil Left and Conservatives.

If we were to ask those 80 percent if they wanted
a 5 percent raise across ALL taxpayers, that is even
those who pay no taxes now would pay 5 percent, the
answer would be hell no.

Damn these democrats for what they have done to
Americans.

1) Obama will spend whatever he wants, and demand more.

Obama could raise the debt ceiling, but The House still controls appropriations.

2) the cuts will be phony

You are probably right, but if so he owns all the mischief he does. If the GOP plays into his hands by giving Obama's minion Bernanke an excuse to raise interest rates, the GOP will be co-owner.

While I agree with you that there has been some -- very discouraging -- softening on this issue, please have a look at the latest Rasmussen poll, which is actually more in line with the older polls.

The "19 polls" summary you cite is from a very left-wing web site, which misrepresents a good number of these polls, many of which do NOT EVEN ASK THE QUESTION about whether the respondent favors taxes. In many cases, the question is: do you believe higher taxes will be necessary? So please, don't just quote Lefties as if they tell the truth. This is spin. This web site even repeats the lie that raising taxes will raise revenue. This statement is counterfactual when made across the board. Anybody who doesn't know that is an economic naif.

As to the Gallup poll, it is generally good news for us, and even better news when you consider the internals: The Gallup poll is a poll of adults, not even registered voters. That will typically skew anywhere from 7 to 15 points left of likely voters depending on your weighing methodology. Also, Gallup acknowledges error margins as high as 7% for some individual questions. The most important finding in the poll is that self-identified independents favor the Republican position by 51% - 30%. Very good numbers.

I suggest “The One” solicit the addresses of all of these magnanimous folks and request that they send their personal checks for an amount over and above their current tax bills to the Treasury Department.

“No. The problem is that G.W.B. ruined the US in his 8 years. period”

You can't really believe that, unless you are a biased liberal. For example, Bush and others warned the democrats about the Fannie Mae risks, but were dismissed by the left, including remarks from the left that any criticism of Fannie Mae was racist. The Bush administration could not act unilaterally to fix this, and had they pushed the issue they would have surely been attacked by the leftist sycophants in the MSM.

Bush in the beginning of his second term targeted reform of social security in an attempt to make this entitlement more fiscally sound. He was attacked by the left for this.

Bush did give us some things, like the prescription plan, that increased entitlement spending, but the unemployment rate was significantly lower at the end of his presidency than it is now, nearly three years into Obama’s administration.

The success of our economy and our country requires that people have faith enough in the system that they are willing to work hard, delay gratification, and take risks. Unfortunately the philosophy / ideology of the left is contrary to those fundamentals. George Bush wasn't a dyed in the wool socialist. Obama, and many of those he surrounds himself with are. That's the problem.

"We should not even be this close on a deadline," Obama said. "This is something we should have accomplished earlier."

Interesting since Obama hasn't put forth a budget in two years.
