Reid: No Social Security checks without debt deal
AP 10 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AP) Echoing President Barack Obama's warning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Social Security payments would stop if there is no deal to raise the government's borrowing limit by Aug. 2.
Speaking on the Senate floor, the Nevada Democrat said flatly that payments for veterans benefits and the military, as well as Social Security, would cease if the government defaults on its obligations. His statement goes beyond Obama, who said earlier this week that he could not guarantee Social Security checks will be issued on Aug. 3.
Later, a Reid spokesman said the senator meant to say the payments "could" stop, which would be consistent with the president's comments.
Republicans have called such statements scare tactics.

And Just WHAT does the LDS church say about LYING!?
What?? What about the S.S. “Trust Fund”??
/sarc
In other news: Reid announces that S.S. is actually part of our deficit spending.
Sharpening the tines on the pitchfork.
SS brings in more money than it pays out. The only problem is that they raid the SS funds to pay for other things not related to Social Security. These people are thieves.
Harry must be worried Landra won’t get her check on time.
So, the dem’s are upping the ante. Time for the House to play their hand and pass the prioritized spending bill that puts defense, ss, and medicare as first to get paid.
It must be that famous “liberal” compassion they always talk about...
Boner should demand an itemized list of the money Obama wants to borrow. He could then line item out the waste and fraud. I would make them do it every month. Then approve it for the next month.
I just called my Rat Senator Bill Nelson. He said the checks will be mailed no matter what and has introduced legislation today to make sure. They are cracking.
This is very revealing, because they are admitting that there is no money set aside in the Social Security trust fund to pay benefits.
If it were really a separate fund, then there would be no question about benefits being paid.
And we could also talk about the Democrats using the politics of fear in these negotiations. If Social Security were really a completely separate fund, then the payments would not be threatened by problems with raising the debt ceiling.
If they don’t get this resolved, then priorities will have to be set as far as who gets paid. We’re all still paying our taxes every payday, so the money still is flowing into the treasury. They can pay the majority of government expenses whether the debt ceiling gets raised or not.
Obama and Harry Reid could make sure that senior citizens get their Social Security checks regardless of what happens, if they chose to do so.
I would like to see this bluff called. I want to see the whole thing called...
Let them stop the checks. And then show why it was a CHOICE by Obama and did not need to happen.
My guess, we call the bluff. They fold like a cheap tent. They are not going to stop those payments.
Where are the Republicans and the journalists screaming that the fe[de]ral government will take in somewhere around $196 billion this month and that interest on the debt, Social Security, and the military payroll combined is less than $100 billion? Why isn’t that news?
Call out Reid and Obama for the damnable liars they are!
Heck, if Biden said it, at least we could chalk it up to Gumpism.
The democrat house has gone over 800 days without proposing a budget. Barry submitted one budget that was based on insanity and a firm belief in Santa Claus. What, under Mr. Reid’s leadership, has been done?
Barry did however manage to spend more in his short tenure than all prior President’s combined. Smile for your Guiness Book picture retard-in-chief...
If they stop paying the military, I would expect a military coup within hours.
