The 87 freshmen Republican congressmen who took their seats in the House of Representatives in January were supposed to ensure John Boehners place in American history books.
They still could. Just not in the way the Speaker might have hoped.
...
Mr. Boehner mused this week that negotiating a debt deal acceptable to President Barack Obama, the Republican House majority and a Senate that is nearly evenly split between the parties is like solving a Rubiks cube. But that is only partly true. At least every side moves on a Rubiks cube.
John Boehner is an old-style Republican. Hes conservative, but he doesnt breathe fire, said Randall Ripley, emeritus professor of political science at Ohio State University. He was not prepared for just how far to the right these freshmen are, or for the extreme inflexibility of these people.
Some House GOP freshmen have indicated they will not vote to increase the debt ceiling period. Others have made their vote conditional on trillions of dollars in spending cuts over the next decade and no tax increases.
...
Mr. Boehner needs to muster 218 votes to get any debt-ceiling bill through the House. It appears unlikely he can find that many among his own 240-member caucus. But rallying enough Democrats to a debt-ceiling bill that includes cuts to social programs will not be any easier.
None of the plans being discussed right now could garner the 218 votes needed, Eric Cantor, the No. 2 House Republican, warned on Wednesday.

You’ve been here long enough to know not to confuse a liberal on a rant with facts.
Has anyone seen any flexability on the left??
I love how the media quotes some random professor at a school somewhere in the country claiming to know how Boehner feels. This is news, apparently to get speculation.
“John Boehner is an old-style Republican.”
Yep, the old “go-along-to-get-along,” Robert Michel
kind of guy that just wanted Tip O’Neil to like him and was perfectly content to be in the minority. That’s exactly why Boehner should never have been given the post in these crucial times.
Sometimes I wonder if the enemy is posting fear and dissension here to discourage us. Before we jump all over Boehner let us see what he does first. He did vote not to increase the debt which is a great first start.
This cracks me up. None of the professional politicians or the leftists in the media or academia can make any sense of these freshman GOP. How inflexible they are! Why we usually just pass these debt ceiling increases by voice vote. These dumb rubes won’t make a deal! They won’t be bought! It doesn’t make any sense! Poor John Boehner. A RINO stuck with a caucus full of crazy Tea Party people who actually want to do what they were elected to do: cut government.
Thank God for America’s Tea-Party minded citizens. Without us, Bonehead and The Gobbler would have caved long ago. They may still cave, but THEY will PAY a heavy price in 2012. 2010 was just the warm-up.
I know, but I haven't been here long enough for it not to still be fun.
This is a recipe for someone who will take you where you have been too often before, but who lacks the vision to crash through the underbrush to find higher ground.
Absolutely. Cry Baby Boehner would have already capitulated if not for the Tea Party and the Angry Americans.
I think Mcconnell was stunned at the blowback he got when he announced his ridiculous plan.
They are every bit as flexible as a steel I-beam.
The tea party supported freshmen are saying, “No more business as usual? and the beltway insiders just can’t understand this.
Don't use fire, I heard it won't melt steel.
The tea party supported freshmen are saying, “No more business as usual” and the beltway insiders just can’t understand this.
— Whole reason I posted the article. It’s hilarious. I hope this becomes the new media talking point. —
I know, I laughed when I read about how “far to the right” these new fire-breathing[!] guys are.
Now, if I were President, this guy would be shitting bricks; I’d likely make the “new guys” look like centrists.
{And after cutting things that aren’t Constitutionally mandated, like the DOE, the other DOE, NASA**, the Air Force**, the FCC,
the ATF, etc, I’d instruct my DOJ to read the Constitution’s Bill of Rights EVERY DAY, and these* two laws every week, and
apply them without prejudice to local law enforcement AND the Judiciary.}
