President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks. "I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News. The Obama administration and many economists have

I wonder if Obama took any classes of theirs while at Columbia. Maybe that’s why his records are sealed.

Fine! Then the House should pass their own bill with $2 worth of cuts for every $1 worth of increase. Obama and the Senate Rats could then take it or leave it.

“We, the taxpayers, are the ‘coffers’ he speaks of and we, the taxpayers, are taking your credit card away. It’s over, Mr. zero.”

... but since Social Security and a lot more besides was being paid for on the credit card, it stands to reason that they would stop paying this.

I’ve warned others that ‘no deal’ actually gives Obama more leverage. And the Republican party leaders know it too. Obama can decide what to spend and what not to spend.

Obama needs to grow up and not scare seniors - his way or the highway is simply got to stop - but unfortunately not until November next year.

I felt like I did the day my Poppa died. Still do years later. The emptiness only leaves if you can think hard enough about something else.

This is worse, he is in your face every day. You can never forget what he is doing and the destruction he is causing.

Are your lib nephew and is wife still celebrating? I really do wish they have lost their jobs.

If the debt ceiling is not increased, we need to cut federal spending near 50% starting next month.

What would you do to cut this in half?

Actually no. They both have jobs. She is a bit more conservative than he, calls herself a Republican, but I know they both voted for Obama. I think he will vote Dem next year, but there is hope for her.

Too bad. I have UAW relatives (sister) on the wife’s side. Completely brain dead fools. I take the advice of Henry Higgins’ mother in “My Fair Lady” and keep the conversation to the weather... If I am forced to converse at all. So far I have managed to avoid conversations for all but a cumulative period of a few hours in the last 35 years.

Can’t he just turn them off? Unplug them?

I wish he’d cut them off. For good. And stop the taxing for it. Why do so-called ‘conservatives’ support this socialist ponzi scheme? The answer: They aren’t conservatives when it comes to their own entitlements. If they were true conservatives they’d bite the bullet, take the loss, and say ‘cancel it!!’ at the top of their lungs.

If we default on payments to Social Security recipients because the amount being paid in is just now not paying for the entire program, we should also default on all other federal government pensions (including Congress, Presidents, the military) as there was never any money paid in.

They didn't even bother with a ponzi scheme. They never saved a penny, counting on later generations to pay everything.

Some of it's pretty easy because it's written into law. The part with all those little slices is almost entirely discretionary spending and it ALL goes. The part with the big slices is mostly mandatory spending and it mostly stays, but some of it has to be cut too. That's where the decisions become tough.

Our mandatory spending has reached almost 65% of our total budget, so if you have to cut anything over 35%, some of the mandatory will have to be reduced.

“Drudge headline right now

yes, that’s great for folks like us, but for Granny and Grandpa, they watch the nightly news and read the newspaper for the most part (with some exceptions of course).

You can bet that the news sources that the seniors will be watching after the early bird dinner will not have that headline, but will be framed as “Obama doing his best, while Republicans threaten to cut Social Security Checks!”

That has to be among the world’s worst numerical graphics.

The color key is too small to be readable, the difference between the colors of multiple segments with similar shades is imperceptible, and the major characteristic of each pie wedge is its area, yet it is not the area, but the arc-length which in the number represented. Nor are the five or six biggest chunks separately identified, yet the key suggests just by its size that every item is equal.

Good data representations employ natural groupings and hierarchies, to make information manageable. And to make the KEY information obvious.

A far better chart type for this type of data is a rectangular grid of grouped blocks. Some blocs will combine smaller See for examples:
