In March of 1997 Betty Ford was “honored” with a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from the National Abortion Rights Action League.

Just because Betty Ford got a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from NARAL and was an outspoken opponent of everything that Free Republic stands for (pro-life; pro-gun; pro-family) apparently does not give anyone the right to criticize her on this forum.

Yes, she was an inspiration to a lot of women.

Liberal women.

Let’s just all pretend she was a good Republican and ignore her life’s work and her life’s achievements.

RIP

How long do we have to wait after her funeral before we can post such interesting facts as that Betty Ford received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Abortion Rights Action League?

I'm sure that was one of the high points in her life.

I am sure that it will be mentioned at her funeral by one or more of her lifelong friends and the MSM will sing her praises for being a pioneer in the fight for Abortion rights, but apparently we can't mention it on FREE Republic.

She was an inspiration. God bless her, and rest her soul. ~ BykrBayb

She was? ~ P-Marlowe

Yes, she was.

Because of strong disagreements I have with her, I intended to leave my comments brief. While I don't find a memorial thread the appropriate place for highlighting someone's faults, I also had no intention of singing her praises. Since you devoted so much time and bandwidth to the issue, I'm compelled to tell you a little bit about why I left a kind remark on her memorial thread.

She inspired me and some of my family in ways too private to discuss here. (Yes, I see the irony in that statement, but I'm still going to maintain a measure of privacy. :) ) I will share that she was one of the inspirations for my outspokenness. Her outspokenness on the subjects of breast cancer and substance abuse saved countless lives.

Mrs. Ford was instrumental in removing the shroud of secrecy and shame surrounding cancer (especially breast cancer) and substance abuse. I'm old enough to remember when cancer of any kind was treated like a dirty little secret. We didn't examine our breasts or discuss the issue with our doctors, much less in public. We'd sooner die than discuss such things, and that's usually what happened.

There are a lot of other things I could say about Betty Ford that are not appropriate for a memorial thread, but I'm betting you covered all that last night while I slept. I haven't gotten around to reading all of those posts, and I'm not sure when I will. Busy day ahead. God bless you FRiend.

She was an inspiration in the Recovery community. We (ex-) drunks and junkies thank her.

Hey, watch this, OW: I know you are very angry with her for abortion stuff..... will you also concede that maybe she did a lot for us substance-abusers? She never touched me personally, but I know at least five people, personally, who's life she changed.

She's like any of us: Deeply flawed and sinful, yet not entirely without merit.

Her outspokenness on the subjects of breast cancer and substance abuse saved countless lives.

Countless? Well at last count there are about 50 million lives snuffed out because of her dedication to ensuring that women have the right to indiscriminately sacrifice their children on the altar of Molech.

This was not a memorial thread. The link led to a news story at CNN and the news stories were all singing her praises because she was such a strong abortion rights advocate that NARAL gave her a lifetime achievement award. I didn't intend to take up a whole lot of bandwidth on the subject, but every time I mentioned anything about her achievements in this area, the mods pulled my posts. For whatever reason they had a change of heart and restored all my posts.

If you want to start a "memorial" thread to honor her, then start one. This was not identified as a memorial thread. It was a news thread. Her unending dedication to the extermination of a generation of unborn Americans is something we need to understand and know before we sing her praises and grant her Republican Sainthood.

Let us pray that she repented of her abortion advocacy. I see no evidence that that ever happened.

Whenever I hear the "Anniversary Waltz" I'll see Gerald and Betty Ford dancing in each other's arms.

I'm glad they're together again.

Wow. Give it up, would you?

I would guess that everyone here knows Betty Ford's weaknesses, but she was a strong woman with many characteristics to admire, and her family will miss her greatly. Please stop mucking up this thread.

That’s a list of threads with the keyword “RIP.” Have you gone through the list and picked out the ones that were pro-abortion?

There’s one thread there for a former Marine who was a strong advocate for veterans. He committed suicide. Obviously he wasn’t pro-life. Don’t forget to drop in on that thread and tell everyone about his failings.

I’m sure there are plenty of dead people on that list who had sins worth publicizing. So when you get done trashing Betty Ford, drop in on the other threads too.

If there are any dead people there whose failings your not familiar with, please take the time to research them for us. I guarantee you, not one of them is without sin (unless Jesus Christ is on that list; I didn’t read them all).

I have a couple relatives who are pro-abortion. I love them dearly, but would you please give their eulogies so everyone will know more about their sins than their virtues? After all, that’s what we’re supposed to talk about in the wake of someone’s death, right?

The MSM views her lifetime achievement award from NARAL as a virtue not a sin. She will be praised at her funeral for this achievement in her life. It was a source of personal pride.

do we dishonor her by referencing such a grand achievement?

I hope Bush 41 and Barbara live long enough to see obama gone so he won’t attend their funerals. Same with Nancy Reagan.

Obama will attend a funeral as long as it doesn't conflict with tee time.

DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE POLITICAL?

WHAT DOES THE WHITE HOUSE HAVE TO DO WITH THIS WOMAN’S PASSING?

IF SOME OF YOU SPENT HALF THE TIME PRAYING FOR THIS COUNTRY AS YOU DO HATING OUR OPPOSITION, WE MIGHT JUST TURN THIS THING AROUND!

Truth be told we are all idiots at certain points in our life.

We do things we shouldn’t. We support things that we shouldn’t. We remain silent when we shouldn’t. We shoot off our mouths when we shouldn’t.

Timing is our friend folks...

When each of us die, we will be mourned. Some of us will be lucky to have many people mourn us. Some of us will be mourned by very few.

We will have but a short time for people who appreciated us to mourn before the vultures swoop in. Yes the same vultures who will in time be eaten too.

Betty Ford will be mourned by her family and friends who loved her. She will be mourned by those who were helped at the center she agreed to have bear her name. She will be mourned by people who shared some of her aspects and appreciated her public nature, making it easier for them to deal with adversity. She will be mourned by many people who recognize her flaws as well as her positive aspects. I am glad to be one of them.

When Richard Nixon died, the L.A. Times published a Paul Conrad editorial cartoon, intended to destroy him again before he was even planted. What they accomplished was the destruction of a part of themselves. You see they each had the rest of their lives to destroy Richard Nixon, but by trying to do it on Richard’s day, they reduced their own stature, not his.

I don’t think God celebrates the death of anyone. I think He mourns the loss of them. In God’s wisdom, he knows what they could have been and sees how far they missed the mark. Dancing on other people’s graves would increase the margin of that missed mark IMO. That’s in part why I don’t do it.

What it boils down to is the rememberance of Jesus finger in the dirt.

Farewell Betty Ford. I wish you hadn’t done some of the things you did, but I earnestly salute you for the rest.

Recognizing your shortcomings I will strive to do better, and probably miserably fail. To those who don’t, good for you, for you will have exhibited charity to others in the process.
