The Kentucky Utilities Electric Power Plant in Ghent, shown here in a 2002 file photo, is one of some 600 coal-fired power plants in the US. At least 86 older plants will be forced into early retirement as a result of a new EPA rule, unveiled Thursday.
The EPAs tough new air pollution regulations will force scores of older, dirty, inefficient plants to shut down. Those that remain open must dramatically clean up their emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency hopes these and other measures will improve air quality across 27 states.
Effects should appear relatively quickly. Under the new Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, some 900 coal-fired, natural gas-fueled, and oil-burning power plants must slash emissions by 2014.
"This is a real milestone," exulted Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch, a Washington-based environmental group in a statement. "This is a long-overdue and much-needed step towards protecting the health of people in states downwind of big coal burning power plants. It will prove to be a life saver."
But beyond environmentalists cheers, industry groups were predictably upset. Coal-state lawmakers and industry groups predict the rule will harm the economy.

Obama’s Quote on Coal Industry
“So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because theyre going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”2
Remember, this is all being done to help reduce Global Warming.
they should all switch off the power the day before the 2012 elections and let the delusional Demagogues take responsibility at the polls....
[have to make sure there are enough portable generators to run the elections of course!!!]
Brown outs. Air conditioners shut down. Summer heat wave. Frail seniors die.
All so EPA personnel can enjoy a few self-stroking, feel good, moments.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Hope they shut em down....would be the end of Obammy for sure.
On the hottest day of the year, all coal fired power plants should shut down immediatly. The loss of load will upset the system so bad it will bring down other grids with it. The electric companies should also promise never to burn coal till nObama is out of office.
After a few days of rolling blackouts, combined with hot, humid weather, we won’t hear much more about how bad coal is as people scream for cool again!
How ever will those people with smart cars ever recharge those batteries???
Why don’t they tell the EPA to shove it?
EPA doing what it does best: killing jobs
“Coal state lawmakers...”
Aren’t a lot of them democrats? Are they really THAT stupid? (That’s a rhetorical question).
Pull the meter on every house with an Obama sticker on a car in the driveway. Then we won’t need coal-fired electricity anymore.
The green nuts are accusing utilities of greedily profiting from what in the next breath they say are “small” old coal plants that don’t scrub their smoke. Duh, doesn’t sound like a lot of profit in the big picture.
Yes and so are the voters who keep them there!
All the coal companies should get together and sue the EPA and make it a public trial. Let EPA explain to the American people why they are doing this. And....let them explain who’s orders they are following.
Well...the AnointedIdiot did promise that he would bankrupt and destroy the coal industry.... =.=
If they can do it in the middle east, we can do it here!
