It's called the American Traveler Dignity Act and it would privatize airport security. And despite living in an age of terror, it has a chance of passing thanks to the stupidity and callousness of the TSA.
Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) has once more called for the privatization of airport security amidst the "appalling treatment" travelers receive at airports, in the latest post on the congressman's "Texas Straight Talk" blog.
"The press reports are horrifying," Paul wrote. "Ninety-five-year-old women humiliated, children molested, disabled people abused. Men and women subjected to unwarranted groping and touching of their most private areas, and involuntary radiation exposure."
Paul mentioned a piece of legislation he will introduce this week - The American Traveler Dignity Act - that will address his concerns about airport security and personal privacy. The act, in essence, would hold Transportaion Safety Administration (TSA) employees to the same standards as average citizens in regards to physical contact, making images of another person or causing "physical harm" to another person through the use of radiation-emitting machines.
The final package probably won't go so far. But people are really angry about this and coming up on an election year, lawmakers may not want to risk voting against it.
The rumored Muslim “belly bombs” could throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing.
A powerful whole-body internal scan is supposed to be the answer. A nightmare for frequent flyers, for sure, given the amount of radiation involved.
Good for Paul. About time someone is taking this atrocious seriously.
Does anyone think this is kooky? I think this is a great idea.

No, No, No. The amount of radiation involved needs to be astronomically greater: it just needs to be redirected to the problem.
Islam is a cancer. The cures will need to be radical, or the host will die.
This will not pass the house. There will be enough “safe” republicans to defeat it.

Because we all know frequent flyers are the ones they need to be focused on, not Mohammed with the one way ticket paid in cash. That's the policy.
Too many in the public have been brainwashed into thinking that any request for security is justified under the “precautionary principle”. This is just an absurdity than can be employed justify any action. We need to insist that pols and officials present evidence of efficacy before making decisions regarding policies and programs. If evidence does not exist, then side by side, small scale trial programs should be undertaken to determine efficacy before we are subjected to one big experiment based on a hunch or a hidden agenda. Just think, if the public reflexively and routinely demanded evidence before Congress enacted programs and policies, our government would be only half its size and more effective.
We are not flying commercial again until this problem gets resolved. My fiancee’ is not going to his uncle’s memorial service next month because he says if they try to grope him he will clock somebody. If we absolutely have to fly somewhere we will pay the money to fly Executive Jet.
Security matters most now. Liberty not so much.
Look up Imagine Air. They fly all over the state in Cirruses. We have two to three come in per week.
I won't subject myself to these illegal and disgusting invasions of my privacy either, so if I can't drive I don't go.
I honestly think the States should handle this as a demonstration of State power.
The people, local, state and federal elected leaders should all be handling this and other “war on terror” abuses of liberty. It never should have gotten this far to begin with.
Every time I am about to write Paul off as a total nutter he does something that makes me want to stand up and cheer.
Thanks. I’ll check it out. My fiancee’ is a pilot so we are toying with the idea of just getting a plane.
I might be confused, but a few things stand out about this...first, I think doing something about the TSA is a good idea...and sometimes, even Ron Paul has good ideas.
However, this says it will privatize airport security, but it turns around and says that the bill will subject TSA employees to the same standards as the rest of us. So, if he is regulating the actions of the TSA, that isn’t privatization per se.
Second, if he does privatize security, he will have to ensure that these companies are protected from lawsuits stemming from possible attacks, etc...unless his bill would regulate private business practices.
Oh - in that case, yeh, get a plane. You can get a really nice used Cessna 152 or 172 for the cost of a new car.
