Barack Obama Asks For Texas And Rick Perry To Spare Mexican The Death Penalty
Texas is preparing to execute a Mexican citizen for a gruesome 1994 murder on Thursday despite an appeal by Barack Obama to spare him because he was not granted the consular help required by international law.
By Toby Harnden 05 Jul 2011 Humberto Leal, 38, a native of Monterrey, Mexico was convicted of the 1994 rape and murder of Adria Sauceda, 16, whose naked body was found with a large stick protruding from her. She had been bitten and her head crushed by a lump of asphalt.
The United States Supreme Court is due to decide whether to issue a stay of execution, which Texas state lawyers insist should go ahead.
If the Supreme Court does not intervene, Leal's fate will lie in the hands of Governor Rick Perry of Texas, who is currently pondering whether to join the 2012 presidential race. Texas executes more prisoners than any other US state. In his 10 years in office Mr Perry has refused clemency in 230 executions, almost half the 470 executions in Texas since the death penalty was reinstated in 1974.
Among other evidence against Leal, a bite mark was matched to him and the victim's bloody blouse was found at his home. Leal told police that she had attacked him and had fallen and lost consciousness.
Even Leal's lawyers concede that it was "plausible" he was responsible for Miss Sauceda's death. But they contend that if he had been given consular assistance rather than a state-appointed defence lawyer he would probably have been convicted of manslaughter.

This is designed to help the One with the Hispanic vote.
If he gets the chance and lets the b@stard die, his national favorability goes up +10 pts.
Obviously the Telegraph does not know Texas very well.
Consular assistance or not, he would still have got the death penalty.
Also, I see to recall him claiming he was an American citizen, not a Mexican citizen, right up until it looked like things were not going to be going his way.
The as "required by international law" argument does not apply because the State of Texas was not a signatory.
Everything he does is designed to help him SELF.
He is the epitome of the self-serving scumbag.
I hope Perry just gives Obama the same answer Obama gave Perry when he wanted those Texas counties affected by wildfires to be considered a disaster area. And just as swiftly too.
Except it won’t, because this guy killed a young Hispanic woman.
The illegal/criminal one, maybe. But the law abiding Hispanic vote will side with Perry?
manslaughter? she had a large stick protruding from her. How can there be any possibility of manslaughter? if she was raped there would be physical evidence linking him (I am surmising as I am not an expert on this case).
as a result I cannot think of any result which would have changed the outcome unless they had no physical evidence on him which is hard to believe in a death penalty case like this.
FUBO!!!!
Yup. Help criminal illegal aliens and the mexican vote while those animals kill American citizens.
This will be a great FU to Odumbo, and he should officially announce his candidacy for prez once Leal is wormfood.
Perry should ignore Zero just like he was ignored when he asked for disaster assistance..... JMHO
Why is this murderer only labeled as citizen? it makes him sound so innocent and sweet.
Once again, the real news comes out via a foreign news organization, this time in the UK; as the US based presstitutes are to busy strapping on their presidential kneepads to report facts!
Tell him to go to hell! That goes for the murdering Mexican too!
Perry should say HELL NO!
Darn it..wished I knew how to photoshop as this is a perfect opportunity for a picture of Perry giving Soetero a one finger Texas salute.
FUBO!
It is illegal to ask an arrested suspect about their immigration status.
Illegal alien raped and murdered a 16 year old girl and lived 17 years in jail on taxpayer money.
This criminal should have been drawn and quartered on the Nuevo Laredo bridge and his head stuck there on a pike.
