AUSTIN, Tex. — Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican contemplating a presidential run, shares many attributes with the last man who ran for president from here, his predecessor and onetime patron, George W. Bush. He has the same straight-legged Texas swagger; the down-home, clipped speaking style; the desert-baked conservatism.
But in recent years, Mr. Perry has broken politically with Mr. Bush, questioning his credentials as a fiscal conservative, accusing him of going on “a big government binge” and playing down some of Mr. Bush’s accomplishments in Texas in light of his own.
Mr. Perry’s public statements exposed a long-simmering rivalry that had been little known outside of the political fraternity here but underscores the rightward drift of the Republican Party since Mr. Bush was president. More acutely, Mr. Perry’s criticism holds potential peril and benefit for him should he decide to mount a presidential campaign, allowing him to establish an identity distinct from Mr. Bush but risking a guerrilla campaign against him by the former president’s inner circle.
Mr. Perry, whose aides say will make a decision within weeks, has been meeting around the country with potential fund-raisers, and last week went to Colorado for a gathering of prominent conservative rainmakers held by members of the Koch family, which helped finance the Tea Party movement.....
On government spending, immigration and education, Mr. Perry’s criticisms of Mr. Bush have given him cachet with conservatives, especially with Tea Party voters who blame the former president for allowing spending and the reach of government to grow rapidly.
Those criticisms have burnished the Perry image as less prone to ideological compromise or a fuzzy “compassionate” brand of conservatism, an appealing trait to those Republican primary voters seeking purity in their nominee....

Perry was one of the first politicians to speak out against Arizona SB1070. He found it “troubling” when in point of fact, 1070 was designed to be in strict accordance to federal law.

If that happens, it is an indication that the GOP is nothing but a bunch of RINOs.

Here’s something else to throw in your mix.
I hear that the GOP rules have been modified for next year to eliminate winner take all in favor of proportional delegate allocation. If true, it probably reflects RINO fears of a conservative outsider sweeping the primaries to win early.
I don’t have confirmation or details on that information about new GOP delegate allocation rules, but these potential new rules would make all these candidates in the race potential players.
They would win a chunk of delegates and throw their support to a leading candidate who is short of a majority in a proportional system going into the GOP convention.
Imagine if a Cain, Bachmann, Perry etc. ended up with a delegate chunk and they threw their support to Romney to put him over the top.

Correct. Perry isn’t dumb enough to veto something that passed the legislature with almost 100% of the votes and have his veto overriden.
******* 2001: As a border state governor, Mr. Perry signed state immigration law in 2001 known as the Texas DREAM Act.........It’s important to point out that there is a huge difference in the Texas Dream Act and the The Dream Act that was pushed in Congress and failed. The Dream Act in Congress was full of all kinds of goodies other than allowing children of illegals to receive in state tuition. The Texas Dream Act was focused only on that. I happen to agree with The Texas Dream Act, and so did everyone in the Senate in Texas. It passed with ZERO “no” votes. Add to that, it has been proven to be successful.
Fred Malek is a DC consultant GOP insider with links to Perry and Palin.
The link is that Palin’s former communications director, colleague in local TV news (Anchorage) worked for Malek early in her career.

All (including Democrat opponents) have called him a staunch Conservative, and not one of the dozens issuing opinions has mentioned the vaccine or TTC.
Apparently they don’t consider these things an issue. They DID mention Perry threatening to secede from the unionas a strike against him.
What Perry actually said; “You know, my hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention,” Perry continued. “We’ve got a great union. There is absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what may come out of that? So. But Texas is a very unique place and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”
We had best trust the opinions of our Conservative icons.
We have to run someone capable of winning this thing.
As much as we love our Palin, Backmann and Cain, they simply cannot win.
We must run someone with a proven solid record and cross-over appeal. Even with all his faults, that someone is Rick Perry.
They all have their faults.
There is no perfect Conservative candidate.
Never has been.
Never will be.
We are forced to choose the best of the lot.
That’s just the way it is.

I don’t really “like” Paul a whole lot but I know there were a lot of bloody fights against him by the RINO’s in place like Nevada back in 2008.
Palin and Paul are both people who are despised by RINO’s and insiders. Palin made her enemies in Alaska fighting the Murkowski’s and in 2008 going rogue against the McCain RINO campaign team.
Texas spends $160Million/2 yrs to guard 1300 miles of the U.S. INTERNATIONAL border with Mexico. This must be addressed on the Federal level. The Obama Adm is playing with the border states (the entire county) and he has to be voted out in 2012 before the border will be secured.
Talk about trying to have your cake and eat it too! On the one hand, you suggest that Perry didn't want the legislation to pass, and the legislature just accomodated him by killing it. On the other hand, you suggest that Perry wanted it to pass so he could sign it, secure in the knowledge that it would be overturned by the courts.
Both suggestions are based on your personal opinion, but not founded on any verifiable facts. Yet you throw these ideas out as if they were unassailable.
I get it, you don't like Perry. You like Palin. But don't try to pass off your bias against Perry as objective criticism based on fact.
I just wish he would go ahead and throw his hat in the ring!
