As Helmke leaves, MI editorial shows why his message lost, even in NW

Evergreen State gun owners recall Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke as the fellow who declared war on Starbucks for serving armed citizen patrons — and lost — and as he departs that post, an editorial in a Michigan newspaper yesterday underscores why.

This column discussed Helmke's looming departure the other day. We talked about the record number of CPL holders here while violent crime had declined. We talked about it on a national scale here, all on Helmke's watch. We noted here how Starbucks profits actually climbed after Helmke's attempt to browbeat the business chain into submission.

As America celebrates its 235th birthday — the fireworks remind us all that the revolution was a noisy affair because of all those rifles, muskets and cannons — Helmke is cleaning out his desk at the Brady Campaign offices. After five years on the job, spreading gun prohibition in many guises, he announced last month that he is stepping down.

Whether you like guns or not, their ownership was written into the Constitution and protected for more than two centuries. Largely, that is because most gun owners — and those who hold concealed weapons permits in Michigan — can be trusted to act with maturity and to follow the law.—Jackson Citizen Patriot

The Brady Campaign, and its allies — including Washington CeaseFire — have been on the losing end of a public relations battle that has tried to capitalize on some horrible crimes, including Columbine, Virginia Tech, Seattles Jewish Federation shooting and Capitol Hill massacre, and the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords earlier this year in Tucson. Despite the horror of those incidents, people can still tell the difference between law-abiding gun ownership and the constitutional right that protects it, and the acts of lunatics.

Gun control, as part of "progressives" attempt to impose more and more controls on Americans, has always been based on lies.

Could it be they are finally waking up? Somehow I just can’t buy it.

Not venturing over to the virus-laden examiner blog, but since you’ve already been there (with virus protection, I hope), can you post the direct link to the Michigan newspaper referenced? It would be most appreciated.

The CitPat is my local paper. They still carry an overburden of liberalism but they've gotten better in some ways. I've always loved the logo.

the NW will never wake up...however, we can always savor the victories when they come! anytime liberals lose, even if only temporarily, it is a cause for celebration!

If Helmke doesn’t have a “THIS IS A GUN-FREE HOME!” sign in front of his house, then he’s a complete hypocrite.

It was kinda funny when the editor of the CitPat quit a couple years back. She wrote a farewell editorial and apologized for not bringing us knuckle draggers to the light.
