Wal-Mart Surges Abroad, Slumps at Home
USBC News ^ | 06/31/2011 | The USBC News Wire

Wal-Mart has seen growth of 4.4% in revenue resulting in net income growth of 3% in its world-wide operations, thanks particularily to successes in Mexico, China and Chile. However, corporate growth has been pulled down by its US operations, which have seen sales drop by 1.1% in the same period.

Despite good news in its world wide operations, the drop in US sales remains a cause for concern since 62% of the retailer's revenue come from US shoppers.

Although the economy within the US, especially rising gasoline prices, have hurt the retailer's domestic growth, that doesn't completely explain Wal-Mart's troubles. Rival discounter Costco saw retail sales rise 4% during the same period.

Wal-Mart is trying several new approaches to freshen its domestic sales including smaller one-stop stores, and on-line sales of regular grocery items.

Sounds like its specific to Wal Mart though. The article said Costco saw a 4% increase during the same period.

I don’t really view Costco and WM as direct competitors.
Costco competes with Sams Club.

The majority of Costco sales are grocery. I don't think that's true of WalMart.

Ahh I see. Thank you for the clarification. We don’t have a costco close by. I just assumed since they were mentioned they must be a similar style retailer.

Wal-marts motto should now be:

We don’t carry it anymore
And if we do then it is out of stock.

“We don’t carry it anymore
And if we do then it is out of stock.”

A true synopsis of the Walmart “experience” combined with constant dodging of the “Walmartians” - and just try to get some customer service, or even find someone who will admit to working there.
At least they are good about hiring the elderly and disabled which gives them a chance to earn an income, meager as it is.

Maybe they should rename it “ChinaMart”. Sam must be turning over in his grave.

You don’t have the same demographics or laws in China, Chili and Mexico that exist here. I bet a good portion of the losses here in the U.S. are due to theft and Shoplifting by the entitled classes. I have never been to a Wal-Mart in these other countries but I bet the shop lifting losses are much lower in the stores located there than here.

American companies with global presence are all doing well... but the growth is coming from overseas, and from a declining $USD. Obamanomics is killing us at home.

It’s because the other countries accept shoddy poor quality and don’t even know the difference between good and bad. They feel lucky to be given the choice of poor quality most of the time (that would be the general populations, of course their elite have western quality). I have mostly stopped shopping at Walmart because of poor quality of even inexpensive products. I got tired too of taking things back because of defective packaging.

Exactly. My family is “done” with walmart. Too many Chinese goods, too little customer service. the few buck you save are not worth the poor quality and hassle of visiting their mega stores.

Wow, when we can’t even afford cheap chinese junk, we’re really going in the crapper.
