The American people wont accept tax increases as part of a debt ceiling increase compromise, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday.
In an interview on CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley McCain said even proposed increases on specific taxes was not something Republicans could agree to.
"Well, I think that if we did those small things you're talking about it would have a very small impact but the principle of not raising taxes is something that we campaigned on last November and the results of the election was that the American people don't want their taxes raised and they want to cut spending," McCain said.
McCain said the American people did not want to see a compromise that was partially what Republicans want and partially what Democrats want.
"They don't want compromise. They want us to balance the budget. They want us to stop mortgaging our children and our grandchildren's futures and they don't think that they need their taxes raised. And I don't either," McCain continued.
McCain did, however, suggest that he was open to some "revenue raisers" as part of a debt ceiling compromise but not tax increases.

Let's start with your illegal war in Libya!

FUJM!!!
Voters want an out-of-control federal government brought to heel.
Giving it more money to spend isn’t a solution.
Don’t feed the bears.
What a rotten piece of Garbage and Traitor, this guy is.
You bet your @ss I don’t want a compromise. No tax increases, period.
He is correct. We do NOT want tax increases.
John McKeating will “cross the aisle” in a heartbeat.
If he really wanted to raise revenues he'd propose SLASHING the Capital Gains tax.
Then insane sells out with the last sentence.
Whenever RINO/liberal John McKeating “crosses the aisle, he joins the Conservatives.
Now -- watch them compromise and work against the will of the people.
So now we'll be paying "Revenue Raisers" to the IRS instead of new taxes.........Yeah, that's the ticket.
They also don’t want the borders open & illegals sent home. What about that Juan.
Several months ago, I wrote to my Senators, Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, and my Representative, Dr. Michael Burgess, to tell them in no uncertain terms that I do no want a debt ceiling increase without very significant spending cuts and absolutely no tax increases.
Since the financial crisis began, my household has significantly reduced spending, paid off all debt except the mortgage, and stocked up on reserves. We’ve cut spending so much that I’m driving a ten-year old car even though I’d like a new one. If I can live BENEATH my means, so can the government.
And they better start NOW. The days of raising taxes on the citizens to compensate for financial rewards to political friends are OVER!
Who is this person, and what have done with Juan McCain?
Can’t the old Glue Horse just go away, along with Jabba the Daughter.
It’s the poor, dear, sweet “Maverick” loser crossing back to his side of the aisle, in his desperate attempt to make headlines and stay “relevant”.
After 2012, it’s even money which side he’ll go to, but with his love of scattering tacks on the chairs of Republican Presidents in order to win the accolades of the MSM I’d give it 60-40 he’ll play “Maverick” again and cavort and caper to the cheers and snickers of the Dems.
Here's a weasel statement if I ever read one, typical McCain BS. What other "revenue raisers" are there except taxes and taxes by any other name, such as fees or revenue raisers.
Hey Juan how about reducing government spending?
I want no tax increase and John McCain retired.
