The American people wont accept tax increases as part of a debt ceiling increase compromise, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday.
In an interview on CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley McCain said even proposed increases on specific taxes was not something Republicans could agree to.
"Well, I think that if we did those small things you're talking about it would have a very small impact but the principle of not raising taxes is something that we campaigned on last November and the results of the election was that the American people don't want their taxes raised and they want to cut spending," McCain said.
McCain said the American people did not want to see a compromise that was partially what Republicans want and partially what Democrats want.
"They don't want compromise. They want us to balance the budget. They want us to stop mortgaging our children and our grandchildren's futures and they don't think that they need their taxes raised. And I don't either," McCain continued.
McCain did, however, suggest that he was open to some "revenue raisers" as part of a debt ceiling compromise but not tax increases.

McLame still doesn’t understand what the American people want.
This just in: sky is blue, there are billions of stars, and birds fly.
McCain should be sentenced to some remote work camp in North Korea.
...even a broken clock gives the right time twice a day... =.=
I love that!

I question this man’s loyalty to the Republican Party more and more everyday.
“I question this mans loyalty to the [United States of America] more and more everyday.”
Wow I could’ve written that post. I’ve written to my Cong Michael grimm, saw Boehner last Sunday at a fund raiser promising his word that “he will not blink” on raising taxes to up the debt ceiling,
I drive a 12 year old car, hubby drives a 9 year old car, we have no credit card debt and only owe on our mortgage (we are not underwater). Also we have stocked up on necessities (bought on sale, and still buying btw)..my friends think I’m nuts and tell them I hope I am. Problem with them is they don’t PAY ATTENTION!!!!

George HR Bush lost his election with thosr LYING words.
McCain is an evil POS.
Why does anyone pay attention to this jerk?
Sale of assets.
open to some “revenue raisers” as part of a debt ceiling compromise but not tax increases.
Exactly why Johnny “Crybaby” Boner and others need to face serious primary challenges. The dems are doing nothing but playing hardball power politics while the rino’s are befuddled with no message. As usual.
Some things never change. Obama is still President, and McPain is still giving interviews to Candy Crowley.
Production royalties on oil and gas leases.
Oil and gas lease sales.
Just to name two.
“revenue raisers” = closed tax “loopholes”
= tax hikes
There are other ways for the government to raise funds, however, while promoting business without subsidy (which means the normal revenue from taxes would increase as well..).
We, if we are to rebuild our economy, will have to start somewhere. We could reduce our trade deficit and improve our energy self-sufficiency, raise funds through lease sales and production royalty revenue, collect additional tax revenue on profits and wages, without increasing taxes, just by opening up the 50% of land west of the Mississippi and offshore to exploration again.
Instead, the government will probably burden our phone bills with yet another 'fee'...
