Perry's red-meat Texas agenda boosts a possible race for president

The just-concluded Texas legislative session has armed Gov. Rick Perry with a host of red-meat issues that could entice conservative Republican voters if he jumps into the wide-open presidential primary race.

But analysts say some of those issues could carry consequences in reaching broader constituencies in the general election match-up against President Barack Obama.

Texas' longest-serving governor burnished his conservative profile with legislative victories that included a no-tax budget with $15 billion in cuts, property rights protections, voter ID legislation and a bill requiring sonograms before abortions.

Two other Perry-backed issues - an immigration measure to ban so-called sanctuary cities and legislation to prohibit intrusive airport pat-downs - could also enhance the Texas governor's stature among conservative activists though the measures ultimately died in the Legislature.

Even without declaring, Perry is becoming an early favorite among Tea Party activists for his adherence to limited government and his verbal assaults on Washington.

I don’t know why this article touts tea party support I just read an open letter to the governor to use his powers to call another special session with tons of signatures from all kinds of Tea Party and political orgs..they will not go for zero action on immigration on TSA groping.

If anybody in TX has oil and gas revenues that require tax payments there is an attempt to derail instate tuition for illegals via a lawsuit. More plaintiffs are needed.respond to me for details.

But, seriously folks, there is no one on our side who is not 100X better than the neo-Marxist Obozo. So while we'd all like the "Perfect Conservative" (whomever that may be) to be our nominee, the GOP nominee will get my full support, because now matter which way you cut it, he or she will be helluva a lot better than the alternative.

I thought the Texas legislative session just went down in flames with none of the red-meat issues being passed.

As a Texan, I have misgivings about Perry.

First, the Texas governorship has limited actual authority. Most of the governor's power rests in appointments. Very little power rests in influencing legislation, except via veto or by the selection of which items to include in a special session of the legislature. Most actual power rests with the lieutenant governor. Therefore many of the accomplishments credited to Perry (or formerly credited to Bush, when he was governor) are actually largely attributable to others.

Secondly, Perry has always seemed to be more about Perry, than he has been about actually doing things for the good of the state.

Thirdly, Perry has very little international expertise or experience.

Michele Bachman seems a more sound candidate, although admittedly she is not nearly as well understood here in Texas as is Perry.

Having said all of that, I certainly would support Perry, if he were to become the nominee, as an alternative to four more years of Obama.

It’s not a “Perry-economy.”

It’s a Texas economy.

We were doing just fine before Perry became governor. He tries to take credit for the good results of a pro-business, less government culture that he neither created nor promoted.

Fact is, Perry’s philosophy is to stick government’s nose where it is not needed.

We have to continually fight Perry’s bad ideas. This is one Texan who’s plumb worn out with him.

At first I was appalled at the idea of a Perry candidacy, but I’m coming around. It may be the quickest way to get him out of Texas.

Perry is a little better than that. He has always been good on life and has been somewhat conservative on other issues, except the TTC and immigration. The Romney comparison is wrong, but Perry is far from being a consistent conservative.

Got a good chuckle out of this. Perry's been pimping for amnesty since the day he took office. Did Perry take the lead on the TSA patdown issue, or is he taking credit for others' ideas while working against them in the back room?

Rick Perry's M.O. is to plagarize - verbatim - Reagan stump speeches on the campaign trail, then once in office does everything in his power to stab conservatives in the back, meanwhile divying up the public till among his campaign donors. With Republicans like Perry, who needs democrats?
