WRAY, Ga., - One of the toughest laws yet to fight illegal immigration went into effect today in Georgia. A federal judge has temporarily blocked the most controversial provision - requiring police to check the immigration status of suspects who don't have proper identification.
But it is now a felony to use false documentation to apply for a job. CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann says Georgia farmers have been anticipating this day, and the law is already having a big effect.
In south Georgia, it's a banner year for blackberries - but a bad year for berry farmer Gary Paulk.
"There's a lot of what appear to be good berries," Paulk said. "If we had the workers."
On one corner of this family farm, twenty acres of blackberries rot away.
"This is a healthy field. And it should have been picked," Paulk said. "But there's nobody here."

It should have always been a felony.
Hard to believe that he can’t find teens or other willing to pick berries for $12 hr.
The people I feel sorry for are the waitresses/waiters that get paid $2.85 an hr. You simply can’t rely on tips in this economy. They are the forgotten workers. jmo
“Americans want no part of picking blackberries. It's hot, back-breaking work, for $12 an hour.”
Had them, horses too. The horses were OK but not exactly a cash crop. Cattle were OK but we’re retired now and only need the hay mowed twice a year but can’t even get that done without somebody bringing illegals to do the work. Gave it up! When we had cattle and horses we had the equipment to mow the hay and did it ourselves.
May GOD bless the American farmer.
(Besides, I don't like starving).
make food stamps only able to purchase “raw unharvested farm products” and allow farmers to accept them.
you want food stamps and welfare? you bet, we are a compassionate nation, we understand you can be down on your luck, now, head over to the farm, and help the farmer pick his crops, you can get a whole bunch of corn, and you can even sell or barter what you don’t use.
no one is going to starve with this method, the farmers crops get harvested, they get paid for what they grow, and i bet you get a whole bunch of people off the gub’mint cheese train.
It sounds as though Mr. Paulk had better get picking!
Don't you mean the Capitol building?
And please exempt Bachmann -- tho' I'm wavering on that; Paul Ryan; and a few others.
Members of the Socialist Caucus should work double shifts; and Al Franken should be allowed a generous four hours a day to sleep.
That's only until we can modify the 13th Amendment to sell ALL of Congress into slavery to pay off the national debt. Read the Amendment, slavery is allowed as indentured servitude to pay off debt.(*) And nobody *I* know voted for all this spending...
Cheers!
(*) The only hitch is that the Amendment as written gives the power to Congress to implement through "appropriate legislation" and they won't vote to enslave themselves (tho' they sold us up the river quick enough); and I certainly wouldn't trust Obaama with that power.
Cheers! Cheers!
Can't count the number of times a young man we've just hired will leave for lunch and never come back. And it's not because of the pay or the way they're treated. It's because the work is hot and hard.
Oh, you're from Texas. 'Nuff said.
Cheers!
I think they were talking about Moochelle’s personal staff of 565 people. But, I could be wrong.
“There was just piece on the local news as to how theyre putting parolees to work in the fields but theyre not as good as the Mexicans”
These are border criminals and need to leave NOW,they need to get the short timers as well and do some mechanizing.
Hiring illegal immigrants is much like slavery....and yet, it is ironic that the libtards are for illegal immigration and illegal immigrants. Was it not the Dems who supported slavery prior to the Civil War? =.=
Or, he could do like the blackberry farms do around here. They are U-Pick-It. Makes for a great family outing, the farm gets picked and the farmer makes money.
When I’m lucky I get some of the local Amish guys to bale and stack hay. Those Amish teens are no strangers to hard work and really do a good job.
Except for the ‘...damed straight I do’ instead of ‘...damned straight I am’, I appreciate the approval.
I could have said it better. ;^)
We share the overall thought. I’m glad that we do.
I don’t know the situation but I hope it isn’t like one woman I know who used to have a very profitable day lily operation but had to give it up when she could no longer do most of the work herself. She wanted someone to work for her for thirty five dollars a day! This was less than ten years ago. Apparently she preferred losing the business to paying minimum wage. She wound up “selling” most of her best bulbs in the ground to someone who never paid her a penny. A man I met who was in the same business let his whole operation go to ruin and got nothing for his stock because he refused to sell anything wholesale. He got too old to keep up the gardens and he let almost everything go to ruin because he insisted on retail price for everything.
He would rather get nothing for his bulbs than see someone else make a profit on them.
What’s wrong with hiring high school kids and welfare recipients?
Actually, what they paid the illegals were "market wages." In Georgia, it's illegal to pay anyone less than $5.15 an hour, and if the work is worth less than that, there's no market except the illegal labor market.
Because you have to pay then $5.15 per hour plus social security, even if their labor only produces $2.50 per hour in profits for your business.
