Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne.
The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo's John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer.
Mrs. Bachmann grew up in Waterloo, and used the town as the backdrop for her campaign announcement, where she told Fox News: "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
(Someone has already posted the clip to YouTube under the name BachmannLovesGacy) John Wayne, the movie legend, is in fact from Iowa and the John Wayne birthplace is a celebrated landmark only it's in Winterset, which is a nearly three hour drive away from Waterloo. Gacy, though, had his first taste of the criminal life in Waterloo, where he lived for a short time, and where he had his first criminal conviction for an attempted homosexual assault, which landed him in prison for 18 months. He would move back to Illinois, where his killing spree started, and lasted about six years. In 1980 he was convicted on 33 counts of murder, and was executed in 1994.

As of today the only 2 people I know that I would vote for is Palin and West if they run...Everyone else is a question mark this far out from the primary’s.....a lifetime in the political theatre...
John Wayne Gacy was a Democrat who met the Carters famously.

They had not dated long and did not know each other very well, but Clyde was about to take a job at a pharmacy in Waterloo, Iowa, and they decided to get married. Rather than bother with a church wedding, they eloped, traveling to Knoxville, in Marion County, where Justice of the Peace I. H. Garritson married them on September 29, 1905. They made their first home in Waterloo.
John Wayne Gacy also was a homosexual.
The media highlights what the editors want to highlight.
I think she is over the top touchy about the Flake thing. Perhaps because maybe this is what is whispered about her in the halls of Congress. She refused an apology today from Wallace and acted petty. Not a good start to her most excellent day.
I love John Wayne however I wouldn’t be using him as a central theme of my campaign. He was, after all, an actor.
I also wouldn’t have Rollins as my advisor, that troubles me.
You are right. If John Wayne was born in your town, you'd think they'd have a big statute and teach it in the schools and mention it at public events.
But if John Wayne Gacy was born in your town, I kinda think there wouldn't be any statutes or mentions in public speeches . . . . . .

from Bachmann’s camp:

The Bachmann campaign sent this explanation: “John Wayne is from Iowa, his parents lived in Waterloo.”
And indeed his parents did in fact live briefly in Waterloo in fact, according to “Duke: The Life and Image of John Wayne,” it’s where they met. But soon after their marriage they moved to Winterset, where Wayne was born.
It’s also worth noting that Mrs. Bachmann herself is no stranger to the actor. In the run-up to her campaign announcement she gave an interview to NewsMax.com in which she talked about him as a symbol of a good time in the country’s history.
“We’re seeing the nation move into decline. I’m not willing to do that. I’m not satisfied. I grew up with John Wayne’s America. I was proud that you grew up in John Wayne’s America: Proud to be an American, thrilled to be a patriot,” she said.
R U saying Waterloo might literally be her Waterloo *-?
Oh MY!
You’d think she’d worked for Gerald Ford’s campaign instead of Jimmy Carter’s way back when.
Oh well.
On to the next one..
Barack Obama told voters in Alabama that his parents got together because of the Selam march, except that his parents had already fornicated, conceived baby Barack, got married, and separated in that order BEFORE Selma’s march ever happened.
But some speeches are outright lies, others are gaffes. Apparently it is better to lie to a constituency than to make a geographical error.
Thank you for that information. So John Wayne had his origins in that town, period. She was correct.
They are trying to find a way to cover her gaffe.
John Wayne is not from where his parents met.
It is well known he is from a certain town in Iowa. They take pride in that fact. There are signs in the State about it.
I think this also shows that she can’t really portray herself as someone from Iowa. She is out of touch and didn’t even know that John Wayne was not born in Waterloo.
She was not correct.
I am not from the town where my parents met or lived.
Oh please, certainly her presidential campaign can’t hinge on whether she authentically is “from Iowa”.
Although I'm glad they cut the scene out of the Quiet Man where Sean throttled Mary Kate and buried her in the potato patch.
Picky, picky, picky. And who brought Gacy into the conversation ?
